Becoming an NP after discipline

Published

Hi everyone,

so I was reprimanded with restrictions and served my time. I have been clean and licensed and working for over a year now. I'm currently applying at NP schools and was asked about my disciplinary history. Sigh. I'll be honest, I have to. But, has anyone else had experience getting into NP school with a history? Also, if accepted and if able to finish, what about getting credentialed and insured? I haven't been able to get insurance as an RN due to my disciplinary history. Sigh. Any insights will be much appreciated.

Update for everyone, I was able to obtain my NP license and DEA ! So it’s official ? I’m not sure how the credentialing process will go, but the biggest hurdles are over for now. Once again, my RN consent agreement terms had been completed for a few years and I had no restrictions. So every case is different. I hope this post can encourage others to follow their dreams. I can’t tell you how many times I felt so discouraged and had a sub threshold level of PTSD that I would be punished over and over. I had to remind myself that despite my mistakes I worked a *** ton to better myself and my life, and that I’m a great nurse and will be a great NP. Just have to remind yourself of that sometimes, because this discipline stuff can really put you down. Also family and friends help keep you going. Best of luck for others out there, there is hope.

Congratulations! Thank you for sharing some hope! I really just needed to hear that someone was able to succeed at NP school after their public discipline.

I just started my first semester in a PMHNP program. Can I ask what specialty your degree is in?

Thank you! Yes I wish I had some positive stories to go off when I was applying but there were none. My specialty is psych as well ? In the beginning, a local behavioral health hospital was the first place that accepted me when I was a nurse looking for work under a consent agreement. I ended up sticking with psych because this is the field that was willing to give me a chance. I believe people get well and change for the better and I suppose I developed a passion for it. I’m sure we could do any specialty for NP though!

Hi, thank you so much for your experience and updating! just curious, if you are located in California and dealt with the BRN? I'm in a similar position as you where I've been off probation,  however thinking of going to NP school, but worried the BRN will impose probation again once NP school is over. Was there any explaining or lawyer involved in the application for licensure process for your NP license?

I am in Ohio. I am not sure what the California Board is like, sorry :/ I did consult my lawyer here in Ohio, who specializes in licensure discipline, for an opinion if going back to school and obtaining NP licensure was feasible. Her responses were encouraging. I did not need her assistance during the application process. I recommend you consult with a lawyer in your area who is familiar working with the California Board. Just to get a recommendation/opinion if it is feasible for you! Best wishes.

I am in the same situation as everyone here are, I just got off probation last May and I am applying for MSN-FNP program. Any recommendations as which school would accept someone with prior discipline? What school you guys got into?

I prefer not to write my school on here, basically look for a school who’s application doesn’t ask about prior discipline or need a detailed explanation of such. As long as you are finished with your requirements and unencumbered, it shouldn’t matter anyways. My school was a hybrid, so half online and half I went to in person. Local university. Check out ones around your area.

One school actually denied me for admissions because of my prior discipline eventhough mines already active and unencumbered. They told me that clinical/preceptorship will not be guaranteed due to prior discipline.

Applying to NP school was difficult being in monitoring. Some schools (univ. south Alabama) won't admit those in monitoring while others (VA commonwealth U) have a list of convictions that exclude you. Basically violent crimes, touching children and anything to do with drugs. Evidently were of that ilk in many minds. I have started at walden.

I’m currently in monitoring on probation, did you start at Walden during probation?  It seems like I can’t even take an online class on probation. ? Part of my BON agreements that I tell any Nursing Education program.

has anyone been able to move on with their career after this?

- feeling hopeless ?

I wasn't able to start any program until probation was over.  That means you are unencumbered, which is a requirement of most programs.  I had to provide documentation from the board proving this.  It takes time.  Don't be hopeless!  When is your probation expected to be done?

I’m sorry ? that’s funny because most schools barely even help you find preceptorship, you have to find your own. So I would be like, no kidding it’s not a guarantee, it isn’t for anyone LOL. Keep looking! Don’t give up. You’ll find a school with persistence.

My probation just started and is 1 year long.

Is it going to be hard to find preceptors if you had prior disciplinary action on your RN license?

Even if I get into a FNP program, get my RN monitoring action cleared, will it be easy for me to find jobs as FNP?
