Banner Nurse Fellows Program

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

I interviewed for the nurse fellows program through Banner about three weeks ago and still haven't heard anything! I was talking to another girl there for an interview who said that her friend (I know, I know, don't listen to anything like this, but I can't help it!) got a call a week after her interview offering her a slot. Has anyone else interviewed and heard anything?

I don't know why I'm so freaking out about it. I'm already accepted into Mesa to start in January (I deferred) but I WANT TO GET INTO THIS!

I was just wondering if you could fill me in with any info about the nurse extern program? I just got accepted into the Banner Nurse Fellows program and now that I know you can start the externship after just 3 months of starting, I'm curious what the application process is like?

There is an application you need to fill out. You list your top three choices. The coordinator of the program gets you interviews - and if you are lucky, one of the choices hire you.

Do you get to choose a department or do you rotate like in clinicals?

You list your top three. You can usually get what you want. No rotating - pick a department and stay with it.

Is it true that the pay is comparable to new grad RN's?

Not a chance. $13.00 per hour.

Also, do you know if Estrella excepts applicant after Block I as well or is it just Good Sam as far as you know?

No idea about Estrella...

Try not to think of the externship like a job...it is more like getting paid a fairly respectable wage for getting to practice your skills outside of clinical. It is a great thing...

Thanks!!

Yeah I definetely view an externship as a great opportunity for on-hands training.

Hello all! I am bumping this thread to see if anyone is currently enrolled in the Banner Program or if anyone is applying for October yet? Also I had a few questions!

1. Do you attend Gateway C.C. or Glendale C.C?

2. How is the program set up as far as class times? Are you in school Mon-Fri with clinicals on weekends?

3. I will be applying soon for the program. Any helpful hints or suggestions?

4. This may be more of a question for a Banner Employee......but long term I would like to work in the NICU. After graduation do you think it will be difficult to get a new grad position in the NICU at Good Sam? What other Banner facilities have NICU's?

Thanks so much for your help!

I will be starting the July cohort as the first program @ the Glendale C.C. campus. I have not received my schedule yet so, like you, I'm curious as to what to expect. I've heard that class is from 7a-3p Mon-Thur and once you start clinicals they're on Saturdays. I could be wrong, so if anyone else can correct me please do. I am also a Banner Employee working in the ER. I'm not sure if they accepts new grads in the NICU but I know they do in the ER sometimes depending upon whether you've had experience in the dept. or held an extern spot. I know that @ Banner Good Sam they take externs but I'm not sure if that includes the NICU dept. Hope this helps somewhat and good luck!

Anyone else starting in July at Glendale C.C.?

Gateway CC

Classes M-Tue, Clinicals Wed-Th. Usually. This block classes M-Tue, W (sometimes clinicals community or psych), Thursday off (usually - except for 3 weeks during psych), Friday 12 hour clinicals. The "usual" deal consists of classes M-Tue, clinicals Wed-Th, Friday off.

Read the Banner mission statement/core principles. Think of examples of how you lived up to that statement. Stress how your life is stable and set-up for a very rigorous program (child care set, spouse supportive, etc.). State how you understand it is a fast-paced program that demands lots of time. Give examples of what BANNER hospitals you want to work at, and why you want to work there.

You will NEVER get a NICU job at Good Sam. The NICU at Good Sam is run through Phoenix Childrens Hospital. Their nurses run it. But there is a Level III NICU at Banner Desert and a level II NICU at Thunderbird. Go to the Banner Website and learn about their Valley facilities. That will help you at your interview. For example, if you said "I want to work at Banner Good Sam's NICU" it would have shown you don't know that hospital very well. Not trying to be mean - just showing you what the panel is looking for. Good luck!

Hi,

I applied for the Banner Fellows program and I currently work in the NICU at Desert as a CNA. NICU does hire new grads but only a couple of time a year. Keep an eye on the website, the job listings will indicate if they are hiring new grads.

Good luck:coollook:

I found the mission statement at http://www.bannerhealth.com/About+Us/Our+Mission.htm

is this what you are talking about?

Thanks

Hello all! Thank you SO much for all of the great advice and information! I feel like this gives me a head start on getting in the program **crossing fingers**! Thanks again and Good luck to all of you!

Hi, I am hoping to apply to the BNFP in the Spring of 08..I am going to the information meeting next month but I want to get more info before that. I have a few questions that havent been answered yet:

1. Do you have to be done with your pre-reqs to apply or just in your last semester like for all Maricopa schools?

2. I saw in another post that they have 4 essays you have to answer...what kind of questions are they?? Are they like why you want to be a nurse and things like that??

3. Is there a certain GPA you have to have to apply and I heard they look at your NET scores...anyone know what they have to be??

4. Also so the program isnt 7 days a week then from what I see right?? I am

getting my CNA at Mesa in the Fall and I want to work for Banner Desert as a CNA and that is 3 shifts a week...will I be able to do this since the program is so fast paced??

So if people in the program could let me know that would be great thanks and good luck to everyone in the program already!!
