Banner Nurse Fellows Program

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

I interviewed for the nurse fellows program through Banner about three weeks ago and still haven't heard anything! I was talking to another girl there for an interview who said that her friend (I know, I know, don't listen to anything like this, but I can't help it!) got a call a week after her interview offering her a slot. Has anyone else interviewed and heard anything?

I don't know why I'm so freaking out about it. I'm already accepted into Mesa to start in January (I deferred) but I WANT TO GET INTO THIS!

Thanks for answering my questions...but I want some clarification about one of your answers...I asked if you have to be done with your pre reqs or if you can apply in your last semester..and you answered..yep...which question is that answering?? Do I have to have them completed?? Or can I apply in my last semester while I am completing them?? So if you could let me know that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry about that.:smackingf

You can make provisional application during your last semester. Check the application for the provisional application dates.

FuturePedsRN-- You can apply during your last semester while you are comleting your final pre-reqs, although you probably won't get in for the cohort you're applying to. I did just that when I turned in my application last July, but received a letter that they had already filled the spots for the October cohort. I then had my interview in November and was offered a spot in March. Also, for help on the interview questions, read the earlier posts on this thread.

Good luck to you!

How far in advance do they start interviewing?

lovinla23--thanks for the advice...so then is it just better to apply when you are done with the pre reqs or do they encourage you to apply in your last semester?? Did you apply in July and then for march?? Or did they does it just continue over to the next cohort if the one you apply for is full?? Thanks!

qaqueen-- They hold interviews about 4-5 months before the cohort starts.

FuturePedsRN-- I think they encourage you to apply in your last semester since it's very competitive and you only have to apply once so if they're already full for the cohort you applied for, then they hold onto your application for the next one. Yes I applied only once in July (for the October cohort) and they continued my application over for March. If you add the months up, it's actually less of a wait than the other Maricopa Community College programs.

I found the mission statement at http://www.bannerhealth.com/About+Us/Our+Mission.htm

is this what you are talking about?

Thanks

Yep. Think of specific examples of how you have fulfilled those statements in your past jobs, etc.

4. Also so the program isnt 7 days a week then from what I see right?? I am

getting my CNA at Mesa in the Fall and I want to work for Banner Desert as a CNA and that is 3 shifts a week...will I be able to do this since the program is so fast paced??

The people in my program working full-time are by and large absolutely miserable with the experience. It is very, very rough. And I wouldn't share that you will work full-time with the panel as they want to see that school (not work) is your main priority. Think carefully about working more than 1.5 days per week. Expect your grades and personal life to be completely shot and to be walking around sleep-deprived like a zombie. If you can, save up some money, get a loan, or just work part-time.

I don't plan on sharing it with the board but the thing is that I HAVE to work full time when I get my CNA because in order to get full insurance benefits I have to be full time and I will need that insurance cause I wont be able to afford it on my own. I also think being a CNA is very valuable to me succeeding in the nursing program because I will already have the basic nursing skills and will have already seen most of the procedures that I will see in clinicals performed while working. I plan on working the 7am-7pm shift...so if I get that I will still have time to study after work and I wont be that sleep deprived. I don't mind that I wont have that much of a social life...I want to be a nurse so bad I am willing to sacrifice that just a little bit. Also I wont be able to save up enough to pay my rent for 16 months its just not possible with other bills and rent, etc. Also I don't want to not work and miss out on the experience. If the board asks me if I work I will probably fib a bit...but honestly I am just going to stress the fact that it is invaluable information that will help me in nursing school. Also full time as a CNA is 3 days a week which isnt that bad so I figure I will just work the 3 days I don't have school and I know if I get into the Banner program that the hospital will be flexible with my schedule cause I plan on working at Banner Desert. But thanks for the advice not to mention my full time work to the board.

I certainly empathize with your financial situation. That is key. Don't put too much stock in the CNA stuff. It will outgrow its usefullness after about 2 months as a learning experience. Just be super-organized and pace yourself. Things can get brutally quick-paced, particularly in Block 3. Good luck - I love the Banner Program and can't say enough great things about it. Run by a super person who you will adore...

I would NOT recommend full time work during the Banner Nurse Fellows Program. Banner does pay benefits for 32 hours worked in a pay period (according to their website). That's only 16 hours per week. You may have to pay more for the benefits, but I would supplement that part time income with a student loan.

I am also in the Banner Nurse Fellows program --first block. Working two days per week would work, but I don't think 3 would. Believe me! After being in class for almost 8 hours/day, 4 days per week you do not feel like coming home and giving it your all with studying. Most of the time, I am mentally tired. I can't imagine doing that for 16 months straight! Also, if you get sick, you're screwed because you can never rest! The people who aren't doing well in my cohort are the people who are working too much.

Good luck! I would really reconsider your schedule. You may be able to do it. If so...more power to you!

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely consider working less hours..I am thinking 24 hours a week. But I still have a long time till I start the nursing program...hopefully oct 08 and but I am going to start working as a CNA starting this January hopefully. But when I interview for the job I will definitely ask about flexiblilty once I start nursing school.

Selaz: Where on banners website did u find that you have to work 32 hours during a pay period?? I cant find it. If you could give me a link to the page you found it on that would be awesome!! Thanks
