Banner Nurse Fellows Program

Published

I interviewed for the nurse fellows program through Banner about three weeks ago and still haven't heard anything! I was talking to another girl there for an interview who said that her friend (I know, I know, don't listen to anything like this, but I can't help it!) got a call a week after her interview offering her a slot. Has anyone else interviewed and heard anything?

I don't know why I'm so freaking out about it. I'm already accepted into Mesa to start in January (I deferred) but I WANT TO GET INTO THIS!

Yes, I just too her final. You will get to know her well. I'm not sure if we can post names here...but she is an awesome teacher and a good listener. Just relax and enjoy the ride. Enjoy things while they are quiet - the pace will definitely quicken towards the last half of the Block. But at the end of the day, the material is not that hard. I have found that by studying a little bit every day I can stay on top of most things - it is all a matter of time management. If you have any other questions, be sure to PM me if you wish. Perhaps we will meet someday!

Oh yeah - they will bring up the externships about midway through the Block. Trust me - they won't forget!

One other thing - you can tell the Block is winding down. I haven't posted in ages!!!! Things can get so hectic your head can spin!

I'm also a Banner employee and am waiting for an interview in November for placement in the March cohort (I'm crossing my fingers!). Can anyone give advice or tips on what they ask during the interview? I'd like to be as best prepared as possible. The waiting list for the community colleges has reached a year now and I'm really hoping on getting into an accelerated program. Without any children and not having to work full-time I am confident that I could succeed in the program.

I don't know if they change the questions between cohorts or not - maybe Stopnik's were different - but you had to give examples of times that you showed compassion, times you showed good customer service, etc. Those are the two main ones I had. They wanted to know why you were going into the nursing career too. You answer all these questions in front of a panel of people, so it can be a little bit nerve-wracking.

You really can't prepare for the questions. The competition can be fierce. But one of the main things they are looking for is can you handle an accelerated program. It is very accelerated - the pace is fast and furious. From what you wrote, you can. Be sure to stress that - over and over and over. Sounds cheesy - but just be yourself...

Without any children and not having to work full-time I am confident that I could succeed in the program.

Just repeat that about 10 times in your interview. That is what they want to hear. No joke. Too many people apply for the program and then realize the pace is too quick for work, kids, etc.

Thank you so much for the the advice! Now I think I'll feel a little more prepared, aside from the nerves I'll be having on the day I have the interview. :uhoh3:

I'm just not sure what my chances are of making the cut, consdering they only take 30 students per cohort and I'm not sure how many qualified applicants they get. Does anyone else know by chance??

Do you know anyone who applied for this program and got an interview but was not accepted? If you do, did they know why they might have been turned down? I interviewed for the program and I know a couple people who also interviewed they were called and offered a spot in the program, but I have yet to recieve a call. And it looks like they are calling people in order. I know the girl that interviewed right before I did and they already called her. :uhoh21:

Stopnik,

On one of your threads you said that Banner hires during block I for an externship. All of the Banner hospitals I've contacted only hire after block II. Does the fellowship program get that much of preferential treatment? In fact, Banner Desert wouldn't even let me APPLY for an externship until I was within one year of graduation.

Just curious, I've been trying to get an externship since Sept.!! Problem is some of the ones that have been posted (by another hospital) were filled internally and never should've been on the web page in the first place. Also, I've applied to a couple at Banner Desert and have been denied because I was two weeks shy of being within a year of graduating!! It's very frustrating!!

Thanks,

Keli

Due to the accelerated nature of the program, you are within one year of graduation when you are still in Block I. In fact, I began my externship with about 13 months to go...they made an exception at GOOD SAM for Banner Fellows. Note that is Good Sam - I can't speak for other places...

Thanks,

I figured you'd be within a year of graduating during block II, not 1, so that makes sense. I know every Banner is different, my friend got a job last month (13 months before we graduate) at another Banner hospital and applied 14 months before we graduate. Banner Desert won't even look at your application until you're within a year.

What area are you working in? I'm still trying to figure out where I want to end up. I did really like OB though, but that area is pretty competetive so we'll see.

Good luck with everything, I have to study for the HESI now....:lol2:

Hello everyone,

I have a couple of questions regarding the Banner fellowship program and I'm hoping someone out there can help! I will be attending the information session on January 16, 2007. I have researched about as much as i can find about the program but I still have a couple of questions. First, about how many people attend the average information session, and how many people apply for the program? Since Maricopa's nursing program is open to everyone, what does Banner base their selection on? Secondly, does anyone know (this may have been answered before, sorry) how many sessions start each year, is it two? Does anyone have the approximate dates for the programs beginning in 2007. Thanks for your help.

Dave
