B honest, how many B or C students are out there?

Nursing Students General Students

I posted my B grades and it seems like I am the only one? Am I or are all of you B students out there made to feel ashamed of your grades? It seems lately there has been an aweful lot of talk about being an A student. I was feeling kind of down about the fact that I worked my back side off and the best I could do was a B. Please tell me I am not alone here. I know I can't be but where are all of you? I know as far as averages go in my class of 40+ students only about 8 of them were A's for the semester. Please post so I can congratulate all of the other passing grades as well!

I will post mine. I am finally proud of my accomplishments!

B+ (last but not least) Microbiology

Anyone else want to share their sucesses here?:)

I think many people who cry when they get B's are in for a rude awakening when they start the actual nursing program...

We have had a few pull off an or two in Nsg 1, but now that we are almost done, Nsg 1 was a piece of cake.... But its not when you first come in... Everything changes.. Nsg programs are soooooo much different from regular classes and it throw alot of people into shock... Once you get the hang of it.. You will jumping up and down for those Bs and Cs...

heck my goal for every test is a 75... cause that is what I have to have EACH AND EVERY test to continue in the program. I usually make Bs on the test, even managed to squeak out an A on a test here and there, but a 75 is my goal...

do you goto my school?!? for the first time since I have been "back" in school (2nd semester BSN) i got 2 B's in a semester (nevermind they were in 5-hour classes so my GPA took a DIVE) but i wasn't going to kill myself for A's

Nursing school tests are totally different from any other tests i've taken and there are usually 3-5 A's in a class of 95...many many more F's... so i'll take my B's and try to bring my GPA back up w/ electives so i can get into grad school...

From someone who has been there/done that -- don't get hung up on your grades. Focus on learning the material -- and learn to weed out what is most important. Don't focus on who got what grade (it's their business, not yours) -- some top students will fail NCLEX -- and some of those non-A/B students will pass NCLEX and succeed in their careers. I never discussed my GPA with another student. Never. Fine line between being proud of my accomplishments and bragging. Graduating from nursing school at 39, my grades were for me. I didn't tell one person in my class that I graduated 5th in my class -- I don't think I even told my spouse. Just my two cents.

Graduating 5th in your class said it all, that is why you didn't. Good job!

edited to change the % to 5

Here's a newsflash - just b/c your an A student will not equate to being an "A" nurse. I've seen too many "A" students who can't cut it on nursing units and alot of B and C student who are far better in the clinical setting. My suggestion - keep the emphasis on your grades in perspective and...how much is your GPA really going factor in to your practice?

It may not factor at all in your practice but as alot of folks here have alluded to, many of them will be furthering their education. In the educational realm alot of stock is placed upon the GPA. This is a fact of life I'm afraid. I don't agree with it but it will not change in my life time. I will continue to learn and do the best I can whether or not I get an A , B or C ( that is a low as I am willing to go! lol)

You missed the point here. No one is talking about a 4.0 student being a better nurse than someone with a 2.5 We are talking about how important grades are, fact of life in most places, can't argue it either and you can't change it. Some/most schools place heavy emphasis on GPA to just get INTO nursing school some places a C or even a B student just wont get in (which is ridiculas yes but just how it is)...so yes it is VERY important. And also those of us who plan to go onto further education (master degree, etc) you have to do well in school.

No one is talking about who makes better nurses, we are talking about grades, nothing more.

I got 2 A's and 2 C's this semester it was hard ...

I made a B in every nursing course I took and was proud of it! During med-surg no one made an A in our entire class. I was consistent in my grades and was happy to have a life and a decent grade point average. The few who did make A's had to give up a lot of time with their families or were single.

I'm mostly As with Bs mixed here and there

Hi!

I start the ADN program in the Fall. My grades for the spring semester were:

C in Chemistry,

C Intermediate Algebra,

B- A&P2

B Psychology,

A A&P Lab and

A in Chemistry Lab.

I was NOT allowed to register for the Fall semester because I got a D in Algbra at MIDTERM. I worked my BUTT off trying to bring the grade up. I got a D on the final, but I had signed a contract with my math instrctor stating that IF I spent at least 6 hrs. a week in the math lab, turned in all homework when asked, and got a C on the final we were guaranteed a C in the class. I spent 20 hrs a week in the lab. I really tried!!

On May 08, 2003 I went to the Nursing dept. only to find out that there was a waiting list of about 30 students ALL of whom had a better GPA than I did. She basically told me there was no hope of me getting in this yr. I had finished ALL my req. except Microbiology.

I had to go home and tell my 4 children and my husband that I didn't make it. It was really HARD to tell my 16 y/o girl, 12, 11 and 8 y/o boys that Mommy had failed. My semester GPA was 2.6 my Cummulative GPA was 2.8. They require a GPA of 2.7. [semester]

I have always taught my children that if you try hard enough you can do whatever you try. Now I was living proof that it wasn't true.

I decided to put it in God's hands, becuase sometimes I honestly think that I am possessed by Satan. He does what he can to discourage me and wear me down., trying to convince me that I am a worthless, no good, can't have the golden ring type person. GRRRRR He makes me soooooo mad.

On Tuesday May 12, 2003 I went back to the Nursing office to see about taking a 1 yr. program in Surg. Tech. I figured, I had to keep taking classes so I may as well take classes that would relate to nursing. I checked with the director and she told me I had a spot in the program in the Fall. I cried right in front of her and Thanked God immediately!!

So now I am TERRIFIED!! Is Intermediate algebra really needed? Or is that a 'weed out' class?

I also know that in the ADN program an 80% in a C.

My schedule is Monday I am in clinicals Tuesday and Thursday I am in Lecture and Wednesday I am in Lab. It is an 8 hr. class

I have sooooo many questions and don't even know where to begin.

I am 42 y/o have had some medical training. Advanced first aid 25 yrs ago and a Basic EMT 2 yrs ago. I LOVE medicine but am really afraid of the math!!

Can you all help?

Sorry this is sooooo long!

In His Grace,

Congratulations and you will do great. If you know math is your weakness then prepare by doing alot of math. You can find all kinds of calculation questions online. The best way to handle math is to do alot of it. Take care and good luck!

I wonder how they look at your grades when you are applying for a masters program? I want to get my masters eventually....anyone know do they look at your nursing school grades or what?

At our university, to be admitted to MSN program you need:

Proof of .

RN license (no kidding?!)

3 letters of reference

Write a 300 word essay

As far as GPA, if you have under a 3.0 you have to take a test (Graduate Record Examination-GRE) and receive an acceptable score.

Sounds like a pain in the butt to me! I'm sure the requirements vary state-to-state and school-to-school, but this gives you an idea of the kind of things they look for in Masters Program applicants.
