Average CNA salary?

Published

Hey Everyone,

I am taking a CNA class next week for about 4 weeks and then expect to work as a CNA while I go to school for my RN starting in 2006. Just wondering that the average CNA salary is - and more specifically in CT if anyone knows. Also, would I make more: in a hospital, in a nursing home, or doing home care? I would appreciate any comments or advice. Thanks!

Bay Area California - $16.00-19.00 per hour plus shift diff at two hospitals that I know of.

In NW Indiana, at a nursing home $7.50. I'm at a hospital now (PCA, Patient Care Assistant instead of CNA, pretty much same thing) $9.59 and a $.50 raise this month.

in MA it can vary from about $10-15/hr. you get paid more in the hospitals than nursing homes and home care.

In Texas, minimum wage-9.00 is what i've seen. Not worth it IMHO. I was a

phlebotomist for several years while in nursing school and made 10-12. I was able to see a wider variety of areas in the hospital, and my ability to start IV's was far beyond most in my class. I was also more familiar with lab values which also helped alot.

Specializes in LTC.

In MN it varies. I've had a NH try to hire me for $9.50 and an Assisted Living facility hire me for $11/hr Needless to say I went with the higher paying job which also happened to be the facility I liked the best.

I think our local hospitals start $10.50/hr and up.

I've also seen nursing homes pay more money to aides too.

Specializes in PeriOp, ICU, PICU, NICU.

What part exactly in Connecticut? I believe the Greater Hartford area pays 10-15 dollars an hour.

In Utah, it's around 8 dollars an hour. I really lucked out at my new job and get paid 9.40 (I have experience which helps). In the nursing homes you make about a dollar less.

Oh, I also wanted to say that my first job in the hospital I was paid 8.42 and I currently work in another hospital which pays 9.40.

WOW, they really do pay more in the bay area. I wish San Diego would follow suit. Two years ago, I made $10.61 base as a CNA :angryfire

I know the RNs make more I don't even want to hear how much. As a new grad I started at $27 + $4 shift diff. I know you guys make lots more but our housing prices are approaching yours!!!

Most home health places pay a little more but they generally want aides with some previous experience.

Back in '96-97, I was making $6.50 an hour as a CNA. It was backbreaking work, and the paychecks were terribly depressing. It was a motivator for me to do well in nursing school, though, because I did not want to spend my life a CNA.
