Hey Everyone,
I am taking a CNA class next week for about 4 weeks and then expect to work as a CNA while I go to school for my RN starting in 2006. Just wondering that the average CNA salary is - and more specifically in CT if anyone knows. Also, would I make more: in a hospital, in a nursing home, or doing home care? I would appreciate any comments or advice. Thanks!
I'm in Colorado. The nearest hospital (Vail) pays about $12.50/hr, starting out. The local home health agency starts at $10.40/hour plus $6 per visit for travel. So about $13-$16/hour, for a 1-2 hour visit.
Is that a typical arrangement? When I finish my CNA class, I can work directly for my CNA school's home care agency (partnership between the school and the agency). I was wondering if there was any additional money involved for travel usually. Also, would I make more in home care, or working at a hospital or long term care facility? Thanks.

Not sure if it's typical, since it's the only home health agency I looked at (and the only one in our area). I would imagine that others would have some sort of travel reimbursement or at least pay a few more dollars an hour. I think that b/t the hospital and home care, it's kind of a wash, as far as pay. The benefits of the hospital are-more hours and a more structured schedule, which may equal more money. Plus, get health insurance, etc... The home health pay turns out to be about the same or more per hour, but you are then paying for gas, and I know I might not get 36-40 hours per week. And no benefits.
Charlotte area is about $8 to 8.25.
I get a .50 diff on nights, and .50 if i pull a weekend shift.
Personally, I was working at a much higher paying business job, but was still broke... While I liked that job, I left to become a CNA. Gonna be broke anyway, might as well go for what you like!!
I find being a CNA MUCH more rewarding. And as a student, I don't think there's anything out there that can BETTER prepare you!

Salary.com for my area shows the 25th percentile as being $9.69 when base pay here is $8.52. 75th percentile is on the money though with $11.37
edit: salary.com shows 25th percentile for registered nurses to be $24.07 when base salary here is 18.48. They show the 75th percentile to be $28.58, however, the high end here is about $26. So, from that, it seems like salary.com is a little on the high end for their scale.
