I've heard a lot of people refer to them (or the publishers who get you through their program, at least) as diploma mills. This was coming from people who had nothing to do with California.

How long does it take to do the 30 unit option in California?

And you know what else??? I shouldn't have to be trained to tune out garbage I don't want to hear. It's abuse! Good material for psychological torture! We're supposed to find Britney so cute and endearing now that she's proven she can have a baby? I'm sorry, this thread is making me sick. I'll heed the advice of some of the others and jump ship on this thread. I can't take it anymore.

Please, lady, you are taking this thread waaay too seriously. No one wants harm to come to Britney Spears or her baby no more than they want it to come to anyone else. What we have here is a venting of people who are fed up with having the screeches of no talent (and the girl ranks even above Jessica Simpson and Shania Twain in the world of talentless wonders) brats shoved down our throats around every turn. I have never willingly listened to Britney Spears, nor have I ever cared that she got married and immediately divorced, then remarried, now she is pregnant. I AS WELL AS MILLIONS OF OTHERS COULD CARE LESS. :barf01: But like it or not Britney Spears is going to be shoved in our faces until Kingdom Come. And if we have to suffer through the endless barrage of Britney this and that everytime we turn on a tv or even make a trip to the grocery store, why on earth should we not vent and gripe when we can't even get away from her on the nurse's message boards? Personally, Britney Spears and most of the others turn my stomach and are just more pollutants in the pop wasteland. I wish to goodness she and Madonna and Tom Cruise and that kid he is going to marry and Jessica Simpson would RETIRE and get out of the spotlight!!! WHY WHY WHY MUST WE SUFFER LIKE THIS??? BTW, I don't buy their albums or movies nor would I screech if I saw them in public....I COULD CARE LESS!!! SO COULD MOST OTHERS!!!

Three strikes and you're out seems to be a good rule that could apply here. I think the nursing profession would be held in greater esteem if it didn't look like any Tom, Dick and Harry could be a nurse. Essentially, that is what is happening when people are allowed to take the NCLEX 3+ times. I can understand failing once, but once you fail it seems like you would know what you need to study. Do you want a doctor who had to take the medical boards numerous times? Yes, it is a cold cruel unfair world but there are people who should not be nurses, and the NCLEX isn't doing the world any favors with their testing system.

I have to agree with you. I mean, come on, this was one of those freak accidents that no one could have predicted or prevented. People die everyday in freak accidents. Not that it makes this any easier for the wife of the deceased, but it wasn't anyone's fault. If he was that squeemish at the sight of blood/medical procedures, what was he doing in there? How would he have handled being present at the birth? People are so sue happy it isn't even funny.

I know the feeling of wanting to hurry and get done. if you are going through Excelsior, no matter how fast you prepare for your tests, expect some delays on Excelsior's part. If you fail a test, you muct wait 60 days to retake. You must register for each exam and wait for a confirmation (I got around a very long wait by paying for the classes with a debit card and then calling in to Prometric until they had gotten my info., which was usually a couple of days later) Then, you have to work around the testing center's schedule. Sometimes, they can get you in within a couple of weeks but many times they can't schedule you for several weeks because the testing center stays so full. Then when you finish your written portion you must wait for the CPNE study guide and registration form. Then you have to take a physical, etc.. The lab work they require was expensive (more than $300) and finally you will have to wait 4-6 months to take your CPNE. I hate to sound discouraging but unless you want to knock out a couple of tests or more a month it will be difficult. I finished the ADN program in 11 months but I didn't have any pre-requisites to take. As far as the College Network goes, who told you you need a publishing company? Just ask for a free study guide from Excelsior and use that. Heck of a lot cheaper than 5+ grand.

In that 2.5 yrs. you were enrolled in the school though, would you not say that your experience helped you? I'm saying that it is better to have experience before you enroll in a home study program and I can't renig on that statement.

Since this is your second DUI, does the BON want to send you through the peer assistance program for drug/alcohol abuse? You may have heard that you can't fight city hall. I think the same thing would apply to the BON. If you go before the board to explain your story, I am going to have a hard time believing they will change their minds, especially in dealing with a second DUI. But maybe they will be willing to work with you to ensure you won't have this issue again...or at least attempt it. DUI's lead to more problems than a suspended nursing license...how will you get to work, unless you live within walking distance? I feel for you, this is a difficult thing to go through for sure.

I know and hear of many LPN's who thought they would jump right out of LPN school and into the Excelsior program and be finished in a year or sooner. While there is no law saying you can't do this it is not realistic and not adviseable. Many believe it will be convenient but this is really not the case. You will study as much or more than you would by going through a traditional program. Also, the program is designed for experienced LPN's (and certain other health care workers) and you would not be doing yourself any favors by going right into this program. You will find, if you wait at least a year and preferably longer, that the experience you gain working as an LPN will prove invaluable when you decide to enroll in Excelsior. Consequently, none of the LPN's I knew who planned to go right through Excelsior out of LPN school have done this (including me! I am an Excelsior graduate now, but I went through the program after having four years of experience as an LPN. I'm GLAD I didn't jump right into it as soon as school was over) Nursing school is not teaching you to simply be a nurse, what nursing school has proven, if you get through it, is that you are competent to learn how to be a nurse in a certain setting. After you have worked for awhile you will realize the benefit of gaining work experience before enrolling in the EC program.

This is something the facilities love to hold over nurses' heads. If you leave a hall on your shift without getting fired or told to go home that is patient abandonment and you'll lose your license... BUT what they don't want you to know is that (in this state, at least) if you show up to work and announce out of the blue, "this is my last day," they are NOT supposed to be able to hold this against you.

Excelsior graduate here. If you want to work in California you should look elsewhere, because CA no longer accepts EC grads. Certain other states (like Illinois) will only accept EC grads under certain conditions. Other states are looking into locking them out altogether, but that may not happen for awhile.
