Austin Community College Fall 2011 Hopefuls

Published

Any Fall 2011 ACC hopefuls out there? I start my nursing skills class in March and am very excited. I'm reapplying next week for the Fall. If I calculated my ranking correctly I should make it in.

Good luck everyone!

i need to review those too, even though i just got done with the class a few months ago. I will have to get into open lab that week before school starts, my professor from my nursing skills class said its mostly over vital signs but it wouldnt hurt to look over everything, i also need to study dosage calculations! its been over a year since i took that class so im scared about that lol, we have a test over that the first week of class!

Ugh, I wasn't even thinking about dosage calcs! I did pretty well with them in pharmacology, though, so I should be ok just doing some practice problems.

That's good to know about the vital signs. I'm going to practice on my husband more often.

I read the student handbook, but I'm still having trouble figuring out student shoe requirements. I really want to buy these. They're Crocs but they have no holes and a non-slip tread. They also have a slight cup on the heel. Will they be acceptable? http://www.crocs.com/crocs-mercy-work/10876,default,pd.html?cgid=women-footwear&cid=138&start=16&sz=4

Don't stress too much, the dosage calculation test you take in the first two weeks of level 1 only covers basic p.o. med calculations. We had some students freak and study everything, including IV drip rates and calcs and we aren't tested on that until level 2. A week before class starts you will have access to your classes on Blackboard and there are practice dosage calculation exams to practice on.

The nursing skills check off for us was super simple. In hybrid we took a 20 question multiple choice exam and those who did not pass it had to demonstrate basic skills like handwashing. Those who passed didn't need to do any skills. Not sure about the on-site campuses though.

those shoes are cute! im thinking those would be fine since they have no holes, but i couldnt say for sure, all is says in the handbook is "Shoes must be white and clean without large logo's or colors." so it seems like they would be fine, maybe someone who knows will post back :)

whew! thanks that makes me feel a little better about the doasge calcs. Are the 20 multiple choice questions just a little bit of everything from nursing skills? also do we take the HESI in level 1?

Since your in the program already maybe you can answer a few more questions for me? :) do most students buy the littman stethoscopes? and what kind of shoes would you reccomend? thanks so much!

Not everyone has a Littman. I have had the Littman Master Classic II for years now at work. I got that one because the oncologist I work for told me his got him through medical school and he still uses it. So I just figured if it was good enough to get him through medical school it could certainly get me through nursing school. The instructors will tell you, and this is true, any decent stethoscope will get you through level 1. Once you get to level 3 or 4 maybe invest in a better one. I believe mine was like $100 or so but that was years ago.

A lot of the girls in my class liked Dansko shoes. I can't recall for sure but I can almost swear that they did not want us wearing Crocs. You can always ask during the Jump Start session July 29th or Orientation in August.

There's a jump start session? Man, these folks don't tell us anything. I'm out of town!

Yes, they do one every semester. It's not mandatory but it is informative. You sit with your campus classmates and you spend the day rotating through stations. They do a question and answer session with current RN students who just completed level 1 and other students in other levels, your group also gets about 30 minutes with the Dean of Nursing herself, financial aid spokesperson, and other speakers. If you miss it, it isn't a big deal. It is cool to see and meet some of your classmates who are going to be at other campuses. For me, the most interesting part was the question and answer session with students who had already been through level 1 and other current RN students, and the session with the Dean of Nursing. They will send out an email with the info for the Jump Start session asking you to RSVP because they provide lunch. The only reason I know the date is July 29th is because I will be one of the "current RN students" on the discussion panel.

The mandatory orientation in August is the one that is the most important. That is when you meet at your campus and choose clinical groups, take pics, and meet your instructors.

Thanks for the info Radiation! I might try and cut my trip a little short to attend the Jump Start. If I can't, though, it sounds like I have enough resources online to make up for some of it.

As for the Crocs, I'm pretty sure the issue was with the holes (infection control) and problems with slipping and tripping. I'm guessing these ones would be ok because they're closer to something like NurseMates. I'm not sure I trust any shoe I can't try on, though. I'll t have to hit streets next month!

No prob! When you go and get your uniforms with the patches, the uniform store has white shoe choices that you can try on and see how they feel.
