Austin Community College - ACC - Spring '11 hopefuls

Published

Hi ya'll-

Thought I'd get this started for the rest of us who, sadly, did not make it in for Fall 2010. I'm hoping to re-submit my application for Spring today (or this week). Does anyone know, do we receive the form from the nursing office? Or, is this something we should grab from the website?

My score upon re-applying will be 54.899. Dang, sure am hoping this will be high enough and get me in this round!

How's everyone else holding up? Did everyone complete the pre-req - 1105 already? I have not and won't (due to extenuating circumstances) until early Fall. Will this negatively impact my chances of getting accepted? According to Tammy and the office, no. But, wanting to get everyone's input. Hoping we will hear about acceptance by Sept. Does anyone know this date for sure? The application period closed July 15, don't know why it takes them so long to get this word out.

Anyway- good luck to you. This is my 3rd round of applying :( so I sure am ready to get in and get on with this career change!

They are all good. When your register you'll register under one professor but you don't actually have one proffessor. Everyone at CEC level 1 sits in the same room every mon/wends. One teacher teaches the whole class and the proffesors switch around everyday so one day you may have a proffesor teach one module that day and then the next class another proffesor teachers another module. During the 1st week you'll have 2 proffesors split the class period cause you'll start off with doing 2 modules. So basically the teachers usually teach one module and who teaches a certain day is diifrent so you don't have one proffesor you have them all. During lab its the same thing but proffesors have the tendency to either be morning or afternoon. What you get for lab time depends on what you get for clinicals. You''ll be taught by all the proffesors and i'll tell you right now hands down CEC proffessors are so nice and caring. You will love them. They are not uptight. We actually have one that is really layed back and i mean really layed back during checkoffs. You'll know who it is when you do check offs. When you register you just register for whatever. During orientation you'll find out clinicals/lab times and calendar stuff so don't stress over who to register for cause it doesn't matter. You'l be taught by all proffessors and assigned clinicals and labs.

Thanks for the great information Jackfackmasta. I selected CEC as my first pick, so hopefully I'll be there in the spring.

what ranking were you? and did you have to apply twice?

I was lucky enough to get in on the first try with 55.09.

I asked for:

-hybrid

-CEC

-EVC

But I think I messed up b/c I didn't respond from my ACC email address at first. Now seeing how many put hybrid as their first choice, and knowing that only 30 were accepted last semester for this program, I'm a little worried. I actually would LOVE the CEC but we can't afford for me not to be able to work at least part time. Can any of you first or second semester students who read this thread let me know if you are in one of the non-hybrid programs and able to hold a part time job? I know several hybrid students who say it's do-able but no one in the other programs.

One of my friends is in level 2 at EVC and she works part-time at one of the hospitals on the weekend. Some weekends she works two 12 hour shifts, and other weekends she works two 8 hour shifts. She is handling it well because she stays on top of things during the week as far as studying.

I think working during the week would be really tough but maybe a job on the weekends?

I don't know about you guys but I am ready to get this thing going! :D

I already have all my physical forms ready, TB test done, handbook read, most of my textbooks bought (thanks Half Priced Books), and going to the uniform shop today during lunch just to look around. Of the tons of scrubs I do have, none are teal. *sigh*

Now if only we could know which option we secured I could figure out a work plan. I've waited this long, I figure another couple weeks won't kill me. ;)

Thanks for the info on your coworker who works and does the EVC program.

You are way more ready than me...I'm still working in an unrelated field, in probably the worst job I've ever held, and fighting a major sinus infection. I plan to get it together in October. I already have my TB test as a hospital volunteer, just need to get my doctor to rewrite it on the ACC form. I have read the handbook, as well. As far as textbooks...you mentioned Half Price. Is the book list already out for Spring '11, and are they the same books regardless of campus? Did Half Price have a decent selection, or was it pretty sporifice?

I, too, need to buy my scrubs and shoes. What shoes did you get? I hate it that they have to be ALL white...I never see anyone at the hospital with all-white shoes any more. :-/

I get a TB test twice a year. One for my full time job and the other test for Seton. No the textbook list isnt out for 2011 yet but it hasnt changed drastically in at least 2 years. The green Med Surg book, which will be our Bible for all four semesters has been used since 2006 and there is no new edition slated to come out. I took a chance about 6 months ago and a friend of mine actually saw it in Half Priced Books for only $50!! I believe normally it is about $170 on Amazon. But I am sure you could find it cheaper used if you shop around. Of course I still have the book we used in Nursing Skills and that is used first semester also. The 2011 drug guide I already use at work, so I got that. The other books I got handed down to me by friends who have already graduated. :yeah:

Shoes I haven't gotten yet. I am with you though, I hate all white!

They updated the info on the website for Spring 2011. Our orientation date is January 13th at your respective campuses. They also have a link to the Spring 2011 Textbook list and it takes you to the Fall 2010 list. So I'm assuming that means they will be the exact same.

Awesome! Thanks for the scoop, RADIATIONRN2BE! :D

Can anyone direct me to the link that discusses the differences between CEC, hybrid, and the other options? I mainly wanted to know how many times a week we had to go to an actual location for the hybrid section. I'm just trying to figure out my job situation now instead of worrying about it later. Thank you

Just go to the ACC ADN website and click on level 1 option and choose the different campuses. Most have a calendar you can look at for Fall 2010. The hybrid actually has an old calendar from Spring 2009.

My friend is in level 1 hybrid and she says that Mondays and Tuesdays they have free except for every other week they have to be in the computer lab for exams from 9-11 am and those exams can fall on either a Monday or Tuesday. Clinicals for her are Wednesdays 0630 - 1330 and Thursdays 1300 - 2000. Fridays are free.

CEC actually has their Fall 2010 calendar for you to look at.
