It has been painfully obvious at my school that the students that look like super models got GN jobs right away. Yeah the average looking students are starting to get job now too but they didn't land the first job they interviewed for like the good looking students did. How unfair is that. Has anyone else seen this at their school?
I just want to encourage you that it's not always about the looks! I am 240 lbs and 5' 4" and far from being a super model. I do however have enthusiasm and a passion for nursing that exudes every pore. Nurse recruiters will see how enthusiastic you are about nursing if you just allow yourself to let it fly. Keep at it, you can do it! By the way, I did get a job at the hospital I desired. Part of the application package for this hospital required an essay saying "Why I wanted to be an employee at .... hospital." My passion was able to shine in the essay.
LOL..yes I agree. Some of these post make me wince or shake my head!
Some of the interviewers are half my age, I am ancient! I turn the table on them, and ask them what they
are looking for...looks, youth, or someone that can do the job and talk to the patient.
I act like I dont give a crap! But they hate someone looking them in the eye.
Attractive is nice. I recommend, dress down, way down for the job. Dont make yourself
look like your on the prowl for man meat! Make yourself Look like a female cop! Bundle that beautiful long hair up.
Dont wear perfume when being interviewed or on the job! a lot of sensitive noses on the job.
hate to tell ya this but.........it is a fact of life........people are attracted to attractive people.........basic psychology............
this holds true in any field...........unless you have something special to offer, an attractive person will usually get preference over an average one....
That's life...............
Did a survey amonst mangers/colleagues regarding how well my home care Central Intake Department functioned. Only negative comment was that I hired staff with tattoos "not appropriate" in a healthcare office.
sheesshhhhhhhhhh ....my staff stay in the office and don't visit patients.
I hire staff based on:
a. Can they type, identify word/excel icon on my desktop, handwriting legible
b. Can they spell Philadelphia (must type it 15 x a day)
c. Can they tell me what county Levitown, PA is in.
d. Can they use email
Had to take a close look at my recent hires last year after receiving this feedback: 3 out of 4 hires had tatoos on arms, one on chest that with sweater off noticible; 3rd one on the hand. So I guess all the non-beautiful people are safe applying to me.
agreed! beautiful girls and boys DO get hired first. Just hope they are up to it intellectually! They maybe attractive and cute...but are they smart!Open your eyes, and look around. You do not see ugly people in sales!
I don't know, I have seen a lot of unattractive people in sales. Then again, beauty really is all about perception. I can appreciate a good looking female and it's funny to me some celebrities that are thought to be so hot and I think Really??
Something I have noticed though from being around the automobile industry for 13 years, from what I have said a good 90% of the office and finance people are attractive females. From what I am told is because it's a male dominated field as far as car buying, men usually will take car advice from fellow men which is why majority of sales people in the car industry are male, but they are more likely to be flexible or be willing to do the add ons or what not when it's an attractive female sitting in that chair.
Marketing people know what they are doing.
I would beware of being attractive nurse among other ugly nurses (which are the majority 99% I'm afraid, and if they are not ugly yet they will be). I am an attractive nurse with 2 years experience who was bullied by all the other new grad nurses on the floor including mgmt. Started out as a new grad on the floor. About a year into it a CNA told me they didn't like me and that they were after my license. I thought to myself how could anyone "be after me" when I was so popular with patients (received thank you letters and gifts from them). And my nursing care was impeccable for someone at my level. Long story short they trumped up a phony "policy violation" and terminated me. In my opinion being attractive makes a person an easy target for abuse. Also, I am a rather "quiet" personality compared to the other personalities on this floor who by the are the majority are all new grads themselves!!! BE CAREFUL you attractive nurses!!!
I think the attitude displayed in bold here might have a bearing on the problems you had a work. Really, 99% of nurses are ugly or will be (you must be that 1% I guess ).
Come to the hospital where I live. More then half the nurses I have seen have been fit and attractive, that way you can fit in more and not have to be bullied and harassed for your outstanding looks.
If some nurse gets hired because of looks so be it. My experience is that they live to regret such hiring policies. In rural areas it don't take long for the word to get out and the backlash can be very expensive. I worked with one supervisor that gave easy case loads to eye candy (male/female) because she felt that they were hired for looks not ability. I say "that's life":twocents:
