I have tried for 2 semesters to get into my school's BSN program. It is very competitive and so far I have had no luck. Being in college for 4 years already I feel I need to make some progress ( I did not choose nursing as my major until junior year so I was already behind). This past semester I decided I need to do what is best for me so I can graduate and get a job so I applied for the ADN and BSN program. I currently have about 100 credit hours and only have nursing courses to complete to graduate..I have a good gpa, good act score, good prereq scores, I even made dean's list this past semester. I thought I was for sure in the BSN program (my 1st choice) but would not recieve a letter of acceptance until January. So I was told in November that I was accepted into the ADN program (yay!) so I at least had a back up plan. I Waite and waited and waited and FINALLY got my letter today...and was rejected..again school starts Monday and I have ADN orientation and a math test this Friday. I am sooooo frustrated because I feel unprepared now! I was so sure I could get in BSN that I pushed ADN to the side. I'm happy I am finally in a program but now feel I have wasted so much time and $ and only have a 2 year degree to show for my 6 years of school. I'm even more frustrated that the BSN program Waited so long to send out their letters. I guess I am just disappointed in myself for not finishing what I started. I set out for a 4 year degree and now feel like I am sellig myself short. I know adn is more realistic because I am tired of wasting time just to get rejected over and over again. Any advice or words of wisdom? Did I make the right decision by choosing the realistic path? Thanks for letting me vent!!

I think you made the right choice. After you get your ADN, it's a short hop into the BSN world. I'm about to graduate with my BSN in May...I graduated from highschool in 2004 I changed major from Pre-Pharmacy to nursing during my junior year...so 6 years to get a 4 year degree. It takes some people a LOT longer to get a 2 or 4 year degree. The important thing is that you're trying and doing what's for you. Maybe you could transfer to the BSN program after this semester, and they'll see you're in a nursing program already? Regardless of ADN or BSN, you take the same NCLEX and get paid the same money.

Congrats on the acceptance!! While you may seem disappointed now, remember you were accepted to a nursing program, it may not be your first choice but you were accepted! Where I live it is actually more difficult to get into many of the ADN programs. I think you are being very smart, going after your dream instead of putting your life on hold for another year. There are many RN to BSN programs out there, some only take a year to complete, so you could potentially still earn that BSN in 3 years. Good Luck in school!!

Where I live, the ADN program is better than the BSN program, and it's harder to get into. It's also easier to get a job with the ADN, and all the nurses say they would rather work with ADN grads than the BSN grads. It may not be that way everywhere, but it just may not be as bad as you think. I'm sorry you didn't get your first choice, but you are on your way to meeting your goal, regardless. Congratualtions!

Look at it this way, you were going to need all of those gen ed classes you took to get your BSN anyways so at least they weren't a waste of time. With all of your lib arts classes done you're looking at around 30hrs or so of extra nursing classes in a RN to BSN program to have your BSN. It might not be ideal but at least all of those classes aren't "going to waste".
Due to my personal life (i.e. I work a FT day job w/ a commute and have a 4 y/o and a husband at home) the only option that worked for me was a nights/weekends ADN program. It has always been my goal to get my BSN ASAP though so I've been taking those gen ed courses as I go through my ADN so when I graduate from the ADN program I can jump into a RN-BSN program w/ just the nursing classes left to complete.

there is no need to waste even more time and money trying to get into a bsn program when you could be on your way to getting your rn license already. you can get your bsn eventually, especially now that you have all those credit hours. just work hard and focus on the present and future, not the past. congrats on being accepted and good luck!!

Congratulations on getting into the ADN program! :) You have not wasted all this time, those classes will come in handy later on when you're working as an RN and decide to bridge to the BSN program. You'll end up graduating in two years and will get to work!

You need to go with the program where you were accepted. You can do RN to BSN later. Realize that you pulled off what many can not. Being accepted for the two year program is certainly a lot better than not being accepted at all. Good luck.

I also changed majors in my junior year, from linguistics to nursing. When all is said and done, I will have been in college for 8 years, with a 4-year degree to show for it. Our lives don't always take the course we expect, so try not to beat yourself up. Like other posters have said, it's a short hop to do ADN to BSN if that's what you want :)
thank you guys so much! i was upset at first when i posted this..not getting in to the BSN was pretty shocking and no one likes being rejected, but after some tears and some time to sleep on it, i realize i can only play the cards that i am dealt. for whatever reason i didn't get into the BSN and that sucks, BUT i did get into a program and that is an accomplishment within itself! ADN may not have been my original plan but obviously someone out there has a different plan for me and i am okay with that :) i told my mom that the ADN scrubs for clinicals are cuter anyway (gotta find that silver lining in there somewhere, haha)! the support is greatly appreciated and i feel like i made a good choice! thank you all again!

Congratulations on being accepted into your ADN program. You did the smart thing by applying to both. I'm excited to hear about your courses, and we'll be there when you jump into the BSN!
