At what age do you plan on retiring from nursing?

Was curious to know the ages at which most nurses plan to retire. Nursing will be my 2nd career so in my case I'm looking to work well past normal retirement age (an incentive of course to keep my health at an optimum level).

I know the recession has forced many nurses to delay their retirement, also wondering whether this has actually played a part in your individual decision.

I'm unsure of when I will retire but I know that I will not be working full time as a nurse after the age of 28 years old.

I plan on working full time until hubby retires from the Coast Guard (10 years from now)...after that, I plan on becoming a hermit on our land! Seriously, we own about 130 acres of land in Mississippi and I plan on putting my house smack in the MIDDLE where NOBODY can bother me...then I can hunt, fish, and garden to my heart's content! I can ride my horses, tend my chickens and tomato plants...I might work part time for a few years as there is a forensic psych hospital nearby...but being a hermit is my life's goal!:D

The way things are going, I'll probably "retire" at the end of a long, hard shift 20 or 25 years from now, when I keel over at the nurses' station just as I sign off on the last chart..........:icon_roll

It depends on what you mean by retiring. I plan on stop working as a pt care nurse by age 52, then I will "retire" and do what I really want to do. Proabably teach part time.

I will turn 40 in a couple weeks and have been in health care for 22 years (!).

Have been thinking more about when to retire lately. Always been a saver-plan to have our mortgage paid off in 10 years and no car or other debt. Kids will be starting college in 12 years-that fund is set.

I love what I do-education in a clinic setting and could truly do this into my 70's if I wanted.

Current plan is to work FT until about 57 (20 years with current employer) and then go to part time. Hubby will retire at 65 ( I will be 56 when he retires). I will continue to need health insurance so that weighs heavily on my decision to continue to work and I like my current lifestyle too.

Who knows what will happen but always saving for a rainy day!

Hi, I plan to put my mandatory 30yrs in to collect my full pension, and hopefully, by then I can retire, I would be 56yrs. But who knows, I may be like you and change careers completely. I would love to eventually teach nursing, or even elementary school. I don't want to be at the bedside forever, I know may back will not take it, it already hurts. But its great nursing had so many options. I want to have a full enough life outside of work, so that I can enjoy my later life before I have health problems. But I wonder with this economy, if people my age will even be able to retire in the future. My husband farms, if we could afford it, I would go part-time and help out more at home in a heartbeat.

I retired from teaching thinking that retirement maybe fun. It was for a few years, I did many thing including travelling the world. But now retirement is down right boring so three years ago I went back to university. In November this year I will graduate with a Bachelor of Nursing.

Since attending university I feel alive again and I am looking foward to commencing work as an RN. I will never retire, it is the pits. I will turn 70 years of age in December 30, 2012.

Good question. I am HOPING to retire at the traditional retirement age of 65. BUT my retirement savings are smaller than many I'm now in an odd position where I don't really practice nursing skills...so I won't be able to become a PRn nurse easily.

Since I won't even start nursing until I'm 44, I'll probably die nursing! From what I've been reading, it might actually kill me. :lol2:

By my mid-30s, when I finally become a PA. For now, I still have a lot of pre reqs to complete, and since I will be paying for this on my own, it will take longer.
