ASU Summer 2010 Program Applicants

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hello, everyone!

I submitted my application for the accelerated Summer 2010 program at ASU awhile ago, but I just realized that the February 1st deadline was coming up and wanted to see if anyone else here on allnurses.com applied or is applying. I'm so nervous, I've already applied once and didn't make it--I really, really, really, REALLY hope I can get in this time. :uhoh3:

I'm already starting to get impatient waiting for April!!! My whole life is on hold until then! I hate that I can't apply to any other schools because I'm stuck waiting for ASU and I don't want to pay a bunch of application fees if I make it into ASU regardless. :( Don't get me wrong, though, I really want to get into ASU's program. I just want to get into nursing, really. It's just a little annoying that we will find out about getting into the program so late in the year :banghead:.

Regardless, GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! :heartbeat

What scores are you all applying with?

Totally jealous! I'll be going sometime next week, hopefully. I really can't wait until I get the scrubs, especially! :) I was also curious about what you mentioned earlier about your experience in the Army... women weren't allowed where you were? Do you mind me asking what it was that you did? Or is it a national secret? :p haha, totally joking. That will be a bit of a culture shock going from all/mostly guys to all/mostly women!

They were very helpful at Apparel Pro or whatever the name was. I did almost end up with womens tops, but they caught that error thankfully! Also, all the equipment there is 25% off for students. I just need to get some white shoes, case for the bp cuff, and the pocket organizer. I splurged on some extras too! :D

But yeah with my military experience.... I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you! haha Seriously though, I was in the Infantry, if you know what that is. Infantry is a combat job and therefore women are not allowed.

I'm totally worried about getting financial aid. My husband and I both worked last year and it looks like we made a lot of money (even though most of it went back to paying his grad school loans). I think that they're not going to give me very much because they'll calculate my family contribution and think that I don't need it. However, we're not even suppose to work in Nursing school -- and this is an accelerated program. Hurry up already Financial Aid office! :anbd:

There are actually 8 guys in my junior 1 class right now. I think its great to have some guys in the mix!

And Apparel Pro brings all the clothes you'll need to the information session, and you can order any supplies that day too. just fyi so you dont have to drive to apparel pro yourselves unless you want to!

Does anyone know when we are suppose to turn in the insurance form and the health clearance form? Do we turn it in at the meeting or sooner?

I don't think it said anywhere specifically. I plan to have them ready for the meeting on the 16th.

I turned mine in with the acceptance letter. While turning my stuff in I was told by the gal at the desk that summer was going to be 16 credit hrs. Is this true? Did I get in over my head?. I hope she made a mistake. That seems like a huge load for summer.

I also turned all of my forms in when I turned in the intent form. I had to coerce my doctor into seeing me on such short notice, but thankfully she squeezed me in before lunch on that Tuesday.

As for the 16 credit hours, I believe you are right. Don't think of our summer session as a typical summer session; I know the "normal" summer classes are like 4-5 hour lectures with 3 hour labs every day, Monday through Thursday and they are usually about 4 to 5 weeks long. This, however, is not the case with our classes.

We start our Summer Semester on May 17th and go until August 18th, making our Summer Semester 14 weeks long, just two weeks short of a normal semester. We will have essentially the same schedule as every other Junior 1 class out there: classes will be Monday, Wednesday, Friday with Lab/Clinical on Tuesday and Thursday. We don't get Fridays off like all the other summer classes. And, if the summer schedule is correct, we'll be in class from 9am to anywhere from 2pm to 4pm every day, except Fridays where we get out around 11:30am.

From what I understand, it's just a regular semester, except it's in the summer.

I hope this at least somewhat alleviates your worries--it will be like any other Spring or Fall semester, just 2 weeks shorter and much hotter! :p

Ohh, I see! That is really neat that you were in Infantry, good for you. Thank you for your service in the Army--I can only imagine how intense doing any branch of military is, but doing Infantry has got to be one of the more stressful/intense jobs there and I can bet that it certainly wasn't easy. If you don't mind me asking, did you go overseas at all?

Hurry up already Financial Aid office! :anbd:

Amen! I really wish we could find out if we're going to get financial aid or not... and if we are, I hope we can get it SOON! :uhoh3: It's driving me bonkers about whether or not I'll need to magically come up with like 4 grand (?) to pay for tuition in a month lol. :( Does anyone even know how much tuition will be?? I just realized that I don't actually have a clue... haha

:heartbeat

From the workshop I have summer tuition written down as $6600 or so with the $750 also we have to pay each semester. I was told our total tuition is about $23,000 and that didn't include books, etc.

Yeah it was an interesting experience to say the least! I'm glad I did it, but I'm also glad I got out too. And yeah, I did go overseas. I went to Baghdad, Iraq for 15 months. If you remember when they did the surge in the beginning of 2007, my unit was the very first to get in country as a part of that. We actually had 6 days notice before we left too! lol They told us the day after Christmas and we were wheels up by Jan 2nd I think.

I talked to financial aid today because I was curious for myself. My situation is I maxed out my loans here at MCC but I was listed as a sophmore. As a junior the limits are a little higher. I asked them if they would re-asses my loans and work with me as a junior for the 09-10 FASFA period and he said yes. Then obviously Fall starts the 10-11 FAFSA. So depending on where you are at for grants and loans, from what they were telling me is they will be giving financial aid for the summer. They said it should automatically re-asses me when I register for summer, but he said to call afterwords just to be sure.

Yeah I had the same numbers and those were based on 2009 I believe they said. I don't know if there were any tuition increases since then.

The biggest difference is that we're all in class at 07:30 instead of 09:00 like you guys :p

Ka2010- Where did you get $6600 from? In the packet from the workshop it says $3,537

I had the same number (approx.) that they gave us in the initial workshop. The costs were not in the packet they gave us so they just told us the cost of tuition from 2009 I think. The $3537 sounds more like how much they said Fall and Spring are each, but for some reason the Summer tuition is ridiculously expensive. They explained it, but I didn't understand why.
