Hi everyone, I found this website through google search and caught my attention to post questions that I needed so bad before pursuing an RN.
I am 30 yrs old, asian woman, 4'11" height, 90 pounds.
It has been my dream to be a nurse but due to financial issues that time, we could'nt afford it, so I went to college for two years and I was doing good in school, my GPA was 1.2, highest was 1.0 that's how they grade where the school I went too. It's been over 10 yrs (working for that time too for 6 yrs as graphic artist) and planning to pursue another career that I've dreamed off, a NURSE.
I have been in States for 2 1/2 yrs, have a son (22 months old) and thinking to go back to school, just a matter if I'm qualified in this specific course, but there is something that keep holding me back, I have been told that I am too short. Does it matter being too short or too skinny? :) I am a little concern too since it's been a while for not being in school.
I've got to do something in my life soon, time isn't stopping. I am not getting younger, haha I am not a home body type of person but what keeps me busy is taking care of my precious baby boy. Kindly please hear me.... I am so glad to found this very informative online nursing forum.
I would love to hear everyone's feedback.
Thank You Sooooooooo much with L-O-V-E!

I'm the same height as u are and currently working at a LTC facility. I agree to all who commented that it doesn't matter what height you have nor your age. As long as you can function and provide compassionate care, you are good to go. It can be hard when you are juggling school and taking care of your family at times, just bear in mind that being a nurse is a dream that you wanna pursue. As how the economy is right now, don't expect that you could easily get a job, because you'll be competing with nurses that graduated ahead of you. When you are about to take the nurse licensure exam, have faith. For the road towards it is never easy. Surround yourself with people that is gonna support you all the way. Good Luck!
I think your height and weight won't be a problem. There were a few very tiny students in my own class and they have all gone on to become supervisors, managers, and even administrators.
I have worked with very tiny nurses many times through the years and they do just fine. Obviously, they use step ladders to reach up high or they ask someone taller to assist them.
As for leaving chairs low, I guess it's like putting the toilet seat back down. Look before you sit, even though most guys I know try to remember to put it down. Those chairs are adjustable, after all.
The part about you having a very young child bothers me. School is usually full time, although you can start getting the pre-requisites out of the way part-time, taking 1 or 2 classes per semester if you choose to do that.
You are going to need lots of help from your husband and you will need 2 or 3 babysitters. 1 is not enough. She could get sick or otherwise be unavailable, so you need back-up. you will not be able, most likely, to take the baby to school with you.
Also, and please don't think I am unkind, work on your English. There are a few times in your posts that make you sound like you are not a native speaker. It can only help you if you perfect your English. I don't know if lack of perfection will hold you back or not.
Oh, and, as Cebuana said, the job market for RN's is pretty rough, especially new graduates. You really should research the job market by talking to prospective employers and find out if you are even going to be able to get a job, how long it might take to get one, if you will be able to work in the area of Nursing you want, etc. You might decide to go into a different field, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiology technologist, respiratory therapist, speech therapy, or other. All help patients, all are very honorable and decent-paying.
School can be very expensive. The route I would recommend to keep cost down is to go to the community college and graduate with an Associate's Degree. Then you can complete your BSN later, maybe online, or even get a Master's Degree at the same time you get your BSN. So just explore all of this - costs, types of degrees, time it will take, etc. Some graduates have tons of loans to pay back. I hope you don't do that. But it's up to you, of course.
I wish you all the best and hope you can fulfill your dream.
I'm 4'11'' and 110 lbs and an Asian. I climbed the chair to hang IV because I didn't want to adjust the IV pole. I climbed the counter to get the cerial. I climbed the counter to get the needle points. I climbed the wheeling chair that can wheer around while I stood on it to get some supplies. I didn't ask for help because I wanted to be indipendent as much as possible.
I am not a native English speaker. I'm actually very poor in English, but my heart is for nursing, so guess what! I'm a nurse.
Sometimes, patients and family members offered me a few inches to add my height. They actually teased me about being short. I didn't mind and had real fun with them.
One day, I took care the old lady that was very small. I told her, finally, I took care somebody that smaller than me.
Next day, the daughter told me and my co-worker (one of my good friends) " She thought she can do anything. LOL She told my mother that she can take care of my mother because she finally found somebody that smaller than her." She teased me again about being small and short. My co-worker was smiled.
My life is happier forever since I become a nurse. I love it.

So, I guess you can call yourself, "SMALL BUT TERRIBLE," huh? :) Yup, I've seen a few nurses climb up chairs before. It's nothing new, whatever works to get the job done I always say!
