Asian woman need advice before taking as RN?

Published

Hi everyone, I found this website through google search and caught my attention to post questions that I needed so bad before pursuing an RN.

I am 30 yrs old, asian woman, 4'11" height, 90 pounds.

It has been my dream to be a nurse but due to financial issues that time, we could'nt afford it, so I went to college for two years and I was doing good in school, my GPA was 1.2, highest was 1.0 that's how they grade where the school I went too. It's been over 10 yrs (working for that time too for 6 yrs as graphic artist) and planning to pursue another career that I've dreamed off, a NURSE.

I have been in States for 2 1/2 yrs, have a son (22 months old) and thinking to go back to school, just a matter if I'm qualified in this specific course, but there is something that keep holding me back, I have been told that I am too short. Does it matter being too short or too skinny? :) I am a little concern too since it's been a while for not being in school.

I've got to do something in my life soon, time isn't stopping. I am not getting younger, haha I am not a home body type of person but what keeps me busy is taking care of my precious baby boy. Kindly please hear me.... I am so glad to found this very informative online nursing forum.

I would love to hear everyone's feedback.

Thank You Sooooooooo much with L-O-V-E!

Yours truly is 4'11.. and not 90 pounds lol. But I understand what you mean.

No this will not stop you. Me being a tiny person hasn't stopped me from functioning at my job.(i always ask for help when turning a patient). It doesn't matter whether you are 4'0 and can't lift a thing or 7'0 and can lift 2 patients at once.. What matters is your concern for the patient and ensuring that they get the best care you can give them.

What DOES matter is if you two leave the chairs at the nurses station in the absolute lowest position possible, so that when I come to sit down, I have to bend in an unnatural position just to get down into that chair!!:)

I wish I could be able to do that because I don't have time to sit during my shift.

All right, all right... to document, meaning in-hospital nurses station computers.:clown:

Hey Bebz,

No, it doesn't matter. Size and weight don't play a factor much, as long as they don't prevent nurses from doing what they're suppose to do. There's only a few exceptions. In your case, you'll be fine.

Yea, I know what you mean by 'not getting any younger,' It makes me think of that Cher song, "If I can turn back time," I probably would have done a few things differently. Anyway, this thread is about you...

So, you said nursing is your dream. If you have the resources and time to do it, then do it. Just keep 'realistic expectations' about nursing. Don't expect to have a job/career right away after graduating. Do it because you truly want to be a nurse, not because of the money. The money won't be there by the time you graduate. Best wishes.

there are fields you can do that doesn't require you to lift too much. a lot of my classmates are 4'10, 100 lbs and they're fine!. because she's smart!

You meanie! making fun of short people? lol. . . I secretly wish that I was about 5'5" tall and had either blue or green eyes --- because, THEY GLOW IN THE DARK! :p .... AND THEY HAVE SEXY HYPNOTIC POWERS! :p:)

Thank you so much guys.

Yes, I am 90 lbs (weight). I love to be a nurse because I love to take care people, not for the money, it's been my passion. I never wished to be taller, I feel confident and beautiful inside out! I don't feel insecure at all of my height. I'm grateful enough the life that God has given me. Just wanna have clarity how true things are.

God Bless Everyone

Smartest nurse I ever worked with was about 4'10" and 57yo and she could work circles around us all. She was brilliant PICU nurse(peds intensive care). I never saw her back down from anything, not a trauma, nor a doctor, nor even an irate parent. She could finesse her way our of any situation because she was just an incredible nurse. I always knew that when she was on, i was covered. Jean just wouldn't ALLOW someone to die on her shift (or at least it seemed that way.) It was like she could personally "will" people to live when they were crashing. She was a force to be reckoned with. :nurse:

Sometimes being short can be helpful--such as working with pediatric pts, etc.
