Army Reserve OBLC

Published

Hi,

I see alot of posts about "Active Duty" OBLC, but none on the Reserve component.

Is anyone else going to Oct 30, 2008...OBLC (RC)?

If so, how are you going? If you are flying---did you book your flight/pay or did HRC do the booking?

On a phone message, Mr. Staples of HRC, said my "orders for OBLC" would not be "cut" until the new fiscal year (Oct. 1st).--so I guess I will get a welcome packet then? I do have a class reservation, that's about all I know.

My main concern is about the tranportation aspect- I don't know whether to book a flight & hotel room now or wait.

Any help from reserve officers would help greatly! :)

Hi Sassy, you are only 28 years old!! The saying that once you hit forty is true about it being harder to shed those pounds!! But here we go!! Good luck !

don't feel bad no christmas cookies for me either! :p

sigh, I will forgo my christmas gorging in order to promote a team spirit.. but i expect everyone - and myself - to do some serious calorie expenditures...

please don't be like my first college roommate who would pass out in his room after a case of beers.. with his electronic 'ab workout' machine strapped around his waist.. hah.

My sister did that...only she had one too many bottles of wine with her "ab machine" on. That's ok..we will be missing Halloween and Thanksgiving while we are at OBLC, so we might be able to have one Christmas cookie;).

I was wondering how that works on the holidays do you get christmas or thanksgiving off during training?

I hate to say it that sounds like something I would do to. You would be surprised! :D

Sassy, I am making some assumptions that my Army experiences would be the equivalent of what the navy school house would do...

The "Christmas Season" typically has school houses stop for 2 weeks and all Soldiers were required to take leave and they locked up the barracks.. those that didn't want to take leave formed a small group and lived in a smaller area under some sort of temporary command and did... tasks and what not - as they were not taking leave, but essentially all functions stopped... Normal units 'typically' have block leave during the xmas season where everyone is allowed to take / use up their leave dates and training takes a break..

The Thanksgiving in the school house was a more or less abbreviated holiday... we had a break where it was optional to leave for the 2 or 3 day period... some left others did not...but staying there was feasible for most unless they had nearbly family..it's a tradition in the Army for the officers to serve chow within the chowhall and do so while in the dress blue uniform... it was a fine event and a break and comradre was always experience by those who didn't leave elsewhere.

my 2cents.. I would aware of limitations that will be imposed ie certain left and right limits to your time frame for vacation..but being flexible I'm sure you will be given the opportunity to try and be with family. ;)

Getn and just,

You guys crack me up with the "ab machine" stories. That sounds like something I would have done in nursing school if there was such an electronic ab reducer ! Best of luck in OBLC for I believe you are in the October session??? Take care !

Thanks for the holiday info Just,

We were wondering if our son would be able to come home for Thanksgiving and or Christmas. He is doing his AIT training now and I know we all want him home before he deploys. Does he have to use his own earned time off for the holidays? I was getting confused about that.

Yes, in order to 'take leave for the holidays' you need to use your earned leave. AIT students and such, and at the unit level, will go into leave debt in case they have not yet accrued enough - and they will earn it back at the standard rate of 2.5 days per month.

How leave works is you have to sign out for a block of leave and get it approved..therefore you would be using leave for the saturdays and sundays and holidays in between those dates - as opposed to one just thinking that it would not be applied to sat, sun or holidays.

Once again I'm not sure how long of a timeframe your son will have for thanksgiving... or how far away you are etc. Xmas shouldn't e a problem.

One note that I have... is many peers of mine felt very stressed during training based on specific times / dates that families had coordinated or them to be somewhere or vice versa. The soldier in this situation doesn't have a whole lot of control and any flexibility that can be built in will allow him/her to focus on training and to avoid of an uncontrollable situation hurting a planned vacation.... soldiers are briefed about the dates...and not going outside of those dates/times regardless of the 'special non-refundble ticket he / she may have had purchased ;)'

Sassy,

For those of us attending the upcoming course..we will have Veterans Day off and then two days off due to Thanksgiving while we are at OBLC. We only have three days of FTX one week because of the training holiday.

Thanks 2 ;). My sister is very interesting :icon_roll.

Yes, I will be attending OBLC in less than a week, took my AD oath today.

Thank you so much for clearing the holiday issue up. I'm pretty sure navy and army are proably doing the same thing. I have a young son (4 years old) who I would atleast want to spend X-mas with because he spent it with his dad's side of the family last year. I told my recruiter that I wanted to go the next class after I am approved *** however I was concerned about that and was going to ask her to put me in the class after the holidays if that was an issue. I just wanted atleast X-mas 2 or so days to spend time with him.
