My two biggest pet peeves on here:

(1) Definately

(2) HIPPA (I have been known to publicly reprimand the offenders!!)

There are others, but enough for now ... what are YOUR contributions? I know your out there (and YES I did that on purpose) ... :D

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

Yes, grammar and spelling mistakes make me crazy!! My pet peeve is the improper use of apostrophes. I cringe when I see someone use it to signify a plural instead of the possessive!

Specializes in Stroke Seizure/LTC/SNF/LTAC.
Sorry, couldn't resist! MISSPELL :D

Actually, she did "ALOT" of typos on purpose. You only caught one.:smokin:

Specializes in Acute Care, CM, School Nursing.

Yes, I am a grammar and spelling nerd, too! I always loved English in school.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only Grammar Police on the board!

Specializes in Geriatrics, Home Health.

Yes, I'm part of the Grammar Police, I have to to my English degree to use somehow.

i really hate posts that dont use any punctuation.....or that substitute elipses for periods...it looks like the neverending sentence...and the posts usually dont have paragraph breaks...so the neverenbding sentence runs on...and on...and on....

Another thing that really bugs me, and a lot of people do this, is not putting the period in the right spot when using quotes. They always go inside the quote, fyi ;) "I like to watch TV," she said "then go to mall."

In Canada and the UK, the period goes outside the quotes. I live near the Canadian border, have spent most of my life around Canadians, and was educated by Canadian nuns, so I constantly get that backward.

Specializes in Med/Tele, Home Health, Case Management.

Interesting! I did not know that it was different. Thanks for sharing!

In some countries, the period is used as a comma and vice versa when displaying prices. Must be careful! In Brazil for instance:

R$1,00 is 1 Brazilian real (about 57 US cents at this writing) and R$1.000 is a thousand reais (@ US $570).

Fortunately I don't see people do that on here all that often, not that we talk about money much at all :D

Specializes in ER, cardiac, addictions.

I'm new to this forum, but I'd be happy to join the Grammar Police force if they have any openings. :jester:

I feel the same way about "HIPPA" and "definately." Other pet peeves are "cemetary" (not too commonly used in clinical settings, of course), "Cardiazem," "loose" instead of "lose," "alot" (and the new companion word "alittle"), and throwing in apostrophes (as in "apostrophe's") for plural nouns. :)

Specializes in Plastics. General Surgery. ITU. Oncology.

Laying grinds my gears as in "The patient was laying in the bed".So you nurse chickens then do you? Vet nurse perhaps? :) LYING please.

Mind you a word I always have to stop and think about is "diarrhoea" and I still get it wrong sometimes. Not as wrong as a student I was mentoring once who wrote "the patient has dire rear" in the nursing notes which I thought deserved an "A" for a masterly summary of the situation (the patient had CDiff)

Dire rear ... LOL ... :lol2:

Is that how the British spell it (diarrhoea)? We spell it diarrhea ... :D

Specializes in ED.

Did I mention my hatred for the use of "anyways" and when people use "myself" incorrectly?

"She went to the bar with Joe and myself" or "She went to the bar with Joe and I" drive me up a wall.

It bugs me a little bit when people say, "She is the same age as me," but I can overlook that most of the time.

Specializes in Med/Tele, Home Health, Case Management.

The one that bothers me the most is when someone says, "Where are you at"?

Also, I'm not sure it's really grammar, but saying, "My bad" makes people sound stupid! Can't they just say, "oops"?
