i avoid being critical of poor grammar and spelling, for three reasons:

#1-as has been pointed out, many allnurse members are of different nationalities; while they may communicate verbally in english, they may find written communication more difficult.

#2-far too many younger members acquired communication skills via their cell phones, sending text messages. this has led to a "language sub-culture" which cannot be described as english. hopefully they will eventually become so irritated trying to decipher illiterate doctors' scrawls that they perceive, and correct, the errors of their ways.

#3-one of the plays i studied in english literature was "pygmalion" by george bernard shaw. he states (through his character higgins) that the english have no idea how to speak their own language; it's to be hoped they're a little better at writing it!

i'm sorry i totally disagree with this- whatever the reasons why someone has poor grammar, it does not excuse it. additionally, i feel like we would do a disservice to anyone who needs help with their grammar by not pointing it out- finally, as allnurses is readily accessible to the public, i feel that it portrays our profession in a poor light if several posts are unintelligible, full of spelling and grammatical errors.

Your so right. It drives me crazy that alot of people mispell so many words. If they would just use there spell check's to, it would definately help. Anyways, if people would just ask us for grammer advise noone would get on my nerves.

:hhmth:

lol... you know what? usually i'm pretty good with my spelling and grammar, however it drives me insane when i go over my older posts and notice mistakes of my own...it makes me want to slap my forehead!! i just caught one the other day.... ;)

i think my forte' is more the sentence structure, grammer, and use of punctuation. some posts read like the person is out of breath. no capital letters at the start of sentence or sentences with no periods. there are also also those will cover half a page with a single paragraph yet never once start or officially stop the sentences. not to mention "you" is u and all the texting abbreviations.

This is how I feel about spelling and grammar on allnurses: It is not as important - it is secondary. The reason why I say this is: because the site is not designated for writing thesis in "early English literature" and have them evaluated for spelling and grammar errors, but it is for nursing staff seeking advice, a place to vent and support of people working in the nursing filed. Many of us here come from different backgrounds, with English being a second language and spelling and grammar are not a second nature to us. When you're excited or sad and you just type as fast as possible, you may spell the words incorrectly - it is not what I think about when I write a post on here. I come here to share my joy, ups and downs or simply to support another in the nursing field. Next time for all you "Grammar Police" hold back and don't go crazy - when you criticize the OP for such things it's quite embarrassing.;)

Oh my! I think I went to the post for funny tales but ended up in english class. (did i forget a , somewhere) now I'll check all my old post and never post again.typing isnt my strong point -horrid LD- fear of writing of any kind held me back for so long, but I'm still a good nurse.

i posted something i had thought was funny. i'm married to a college professor who gets some papers that are real humdingers sometimes. one kid emailed him a paper last weekend that was entirely in text

speak (or whatever you call it) and when a relative who teaches esl students sent this tonight, it seemed

to fit in this thread.

those of us ancient enough to remember diagramming sentences in elementary school, had grammer pounded into us, and it's hard to let go. my first career was as an editor and i still edit every

word i read.

one friend kids that he married his wife because she had $25 in savings left after she had bought all her textbooks.:clown: my husband's running joke is that he no longer has to pay an editor when he finishes another book or article!:lol2:
