Are LPN's being phased out?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I know people have been saying for years that everyone would need a BSN and LPN's would be a thing of the past, etc. Well, so far, where I work (a large, magnet hospital) there are still many, many nurses without a BSN -but there are veeery few LPN's. I attended a meeting last week where my supervisor was lecturing RNs about signing off on LPN's charts and she mentioned that there are very few LPN's and even mentioned that some of those LPN's are about to graduate to be RN's. I overheard other RNs in the cafeteria complaining about LPN's basically saying, "what's the point when we have to go behind them."

They are definitely being phased out where I work. They aren't hiring LPN's anymore although the ones who are there aren't getting fired or anything. What is it like where you work? Do you think LPN's have a future?

Is RAM an agency?

muffylpn, did they write you back yet? Is it true that they aren't accepting LPN's anymore? When I spoke to the woman on the phone, I wasn't sure if she meant that they weren't taking any LPN's at the next local event in my area, or taking LPN's nationwide. I assumed she meant nationwide. Please let me know when you hear back from them. Thanks...

Today I really felt the effects of LPN's being phased out. :crying2: I'm an LPN, currently not working though, to be a stay at home mom. I volunteered for (RAM) Remote Area Medical a couple of years ago as an LPN & loved it. I called them today to volunteer again, as they are doing a health fair in my area soon... and got turned down!!! The lady on the phone said they were only taking RN's now! "I'm thinking are you kidding me?! To volunteer?! OMG!" All I did the last time was admit people to be examined. We did BP checks, & wrote down their symptoms & what meds they were on. That was it. Why can't an LPN do that as a volunteer?! I was really looking forward to it... I guess we are being phased out. I know there are still lots of LPN jobs, but when they're phasing us out even as volunteers, that can't be good....

That is disgusting. I'm sorry. :( I've had two people here on allnurses tell me that "LPNs ruined my career" and "I never got to take breaks or go on vacation when I worked with LPNs". We had a very long thread here a while back that involved RNs at a California hospital planning to hold a Candlelight Vigil to get the LVNs fired from their hospital because they didn't like "team nursing". The local RN cabal oops I mean union provided tactical advise and moral support for when. they showed up en masse at the local newspaper's office.

Those of us who started out many years ago were never, never disparaged to the degree they are now and I think Billybob is right that for the most part the ferocity people feel is directly related to their employment status.

This reminds me of those who are the most vocal and hateful to gays- they are normally closeted homosexuals themselves. RNs who insult LPNs are usually the RNs that LPNs can run circles around. It's a defense mechanism.

RAM isn't an agency. This is via RAM's website: "Founded in 1985, Remote Area Medical® (RAM) is a publicly supported all-volunteer charitable organization. Volunteer doctors, nurses, pilots, veterinarians, and support workers participate in expeditions (at their own expense) in some of the world's most exciting places. Medical supplies, medicines, facilities, and vehicles are donated."

No they have not e-mailed me back. I will post if they do.

they did e-mail me back and have no idea who told you that. I told her how upset you were and that you had worked with them in the past. I'm guessing they will try to fix this as the letter was on the nasty side-if u want to e-mail me I can forward it to [email protected]. As it might noe be appro for a board post

I haven't followed this in a while, but the LVNs in a houston area hospital were given a severance package a little over a week ago. I work in a sister facility and we've been told that it's coming our way.

Hi muffylpn, thanks for trying to help me... I appreciate it. I will try to email you soon. So I'm assuming they are accepting LPN's still nationwide??? I wonder if the lady I spoke to on the phone was mistaken or something?... I just hope they are still accepting LPN's. I'd still like to volunteer soon.

Her response seems a bit harsh! What I do know is that in Florida where I live, most hopitals are phasing out LPN positions by not filling the positions when these nurses resign, retire or obtain their RN liscence. I have not heard of any LPN being fired because the hospital is not usng them anymore. The hospital I work at encourages LPNS to obtain their RN and they actually help pay their tuition. Good Luck!:yeah:

I'm a new grad LPN (graduated in May, passed boards in June), I just got hired at a hospital so I'm guessing it depends on where you work at regarding the "LPNs being phased out." There are actually many job listings for LPNs at the hospital that I'm working at. A couple things that I should note is that the hospital is Magnet status and is non-union.
