Are we better than the hosts of The View?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

It's clear that the hosts of the view are poorly informed about what nurses do, and that they completely missed what was so great about Miss Colorado's monologue.

I've seen hundreds of comments from angry healthcare workers - both nurses and other professionals. Most have been appropriate.

But I've also read posts calling Michelle and her co-hosts "cows", ones that call her "butt ugly", and ones that even quip that her sex-reassignment surgery clearly had poor results.

Seriously? Shame on the ones that wrote those comments. They are doing NOTHING to promote nurses as professionals worthy of respect.

Please think before posting and commenting on sites like facebook and twitter (and here) with your feelings about what was said on The View. Your comments are a reflection on our profession and when posters sink to that level it only hurts the cause.

Oh, and since it was mentioned earlier that we ought to provide links to what we're talking about, here's the Sherri Shepard clip discussed:

It would be interesting to see if there's any reaction on today's show.

I have not seen anybody on here calling them names. If you are referring to what some people are saying on Facebook and Twitter, well there are people in the nursing profession that are not professionals. We all know that. But I like to think that most of the people on here are educated, caring, and professional nurses. I have not seen any name-calling.

It would be interesting. I just can't make myself watch to find out.

I'll depend on those of you made of stronger stuff to watch for me.

Personally, I have remained professional in my response, both here and on The View's FB page.

However, I understand the depth of the anger that leads to name calling.

We are human and it's allowed.

Get's tiresome being the PROFESSIONAL all the time.

I've never seen the show but am going to watch it today since I happen to be off and am hoping they address their nonsense. This is probably exactly what The View wants-say something offensive and have more ppl tune in 😡

Some of the posts, hashtags, and pictures on Facebook are out of control. They make nurses look really bad and unprofessional.

Check out the group: "Show me your Stethoscope" for more details.

Some of the posts:

1. "I'm not saying I hate you but I'd unplug your vent to charge my cellphone."

2. "Scrubbing in to remove Joy Behar's head from her a**. Proud RN"

Thank you for writing this piece. I appreciate that nurses are weighing in. I thought Miss Colorado's performance was magnificent. I hope that we as nurses can rise above and avoid any threats in our comments. I have seen some on the website for The View that say things like "You better hope that you don't get sick." and similar comments. This doesn't fit with nursing's Code of Ethics, and I don't believe that it speaks well for our profession, nor our consistent #1 rating as the most honest, ethical profession in annual Gallup surveys. Let's keep it classy!

Actually, the first two are pretty funny, but they need to be said in the break room, away from civilians. We need to remember that our humor releases tension, anger, frustration, etc. Civilians just don't get it.

The third one...no. Just no. We're trying to convince the world that Nurses are vulnerable in the workplace, but resorting to violence fantasy in a reply is ok? Again, no.

Well said OP. I agree that it is horrible what the hosts said. However, I am even more concerned with our fellow nurses that choose to represent this wonderful profession by using such harsh language. Let's band together and use this as a time to show these women what they missed instead of repeating each other. Send stories about what you have done and how exactly that stethoscope works for you in your job. Nurse on all of you wonderful people!

Goes back to what my grandma used to say, "Before you form a response, consider the source."

Considering the hosts of the view have no formal training or education in healthcare, to my knowledge, they are therefore not worthy of any response that goes beyond educational resources.

You can be angry, and express that anger without turning into a childish brat.

Yes, being professional does take effort. That's why most of us have the sense of humor that we do. I personally loved the comment "I'd unplug your vent to recharge my cell phone." Am I going to pass it along to my Nurse friends? Of course I am. Am I going to do it at the Nurse's station, in front of residents and families? Of course not.

Any civilians who ask me about it will get an answer along the lines of "Unfortunately, the show is all about ratings, and one of the ways to boost ratings is to say something shocking or insulting. I hope the hosts of The View aren't really that uninformed about the role of Nurses in healthcare, and simply made a poor decision in their response to the monologue."

Inside, of course, I'm thinking something quite different (I personally can't stand Joy Behar, never thought she was funny, and I would just LOVE to be the one to start an IV, drop an NG or insert a Foley) but that rant can wait for an appropriate audience.
