Applying to BCC Jan 2009

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi Everyone,

Anyone else out there applying to Broward Community College for the Jan 2009 start date?!!! :clown:I'm so nervous and the application period hasn't even opened yet!

For those of you who were admitted on the point system, what kind of gpa did you have? Were any of you able to use your HOSA waiver? I know that they have eliminated the waiting list. I am going to meet with an advisor next Friday to look at my transfer credits. I hope I get in!

They say it's about a month from the time that the application period closed. I heard there's a lot of applicants though and only half of the spots available. I'm nervous, too. I really planned on going to BC so if it falls through, I don't have a contingency plan with another school. It will be a real bummer.

I'm a student that's going back to school for a career change as I already have a Bachelor's from UM and a Master's from FIU (not in nursing, of course). I just want to get started in the program already.

What campus are you thinking of going to? I've been debating between North and South. South is closer to my house but I heard North is much more organized.

Sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I'm doing a career change too. I applied to North because it's closer to my house.

So you heard they have 1/2 the slots less than they normally have?!?! If I don't get in I'm not sure what I will do.

Hi LeavingTeaching,

Thanks for the outline of the program's sched.

Aren't you attending the north campus? Think I've seen you post that somewhere before.

I've heard a few negative things about the central campus and wonder if it's worth the travel to either the north or south campus instead. Seems that some people feel those campuses are better, or more preferred, than central. Any thoughts?

Good luck to everyone who has recently applied!!!

welcome to ALLNURSES olive_nurse, hope you enjoy reading the vast amount of information....warning this site can be addicting.

I applied for the Jan 09 also, see you in class.

I hope we all get in!:nurse:

Thanks LeavingTeaching4RN! That schedule is helpful for planning. How long did you wait before you were notified?

Hey all, I'm new here. I'm not waiting like all of you, YET, lol. But I will either be applying to the Aug 2009 or the Jan 2010 program. But as I'm planning my future, I had a question.

Can you take HCP0130 somewhere other than BC? I know Sheridan Tech has an online Health Careers Core class that sounds similar but its 90 hrs instead of 75hrs. It would be much easier to take this online than having to go to Central, so if anyone knows the answer, please chime in!

Oh and VonneG, I don't think Olive meant they're only accepting half than they normally do. I think she meant half of the applicants. I heard they got around 600 applications, and they only accept like 200-300 at a time.

Good luck to you all! I'm already nervous for me and I haven't applied yet!!

Hey Sunyraygurl

Its good to know you are planning ahead for the future. As far as HCP0130, you can take anywhere. Just go to the nursing dept and make sure they will accept that specific class from watever school before you pay your money. Make sure to stay on top of things at BC because some people will give you false info so don't ever take the first NO for an answer. Always go to the next higher power because there are so many loop holes when it comes to classes being accepted there. Good Luck with everything!

I think it was about 2 weeks before I was notified but I can't say for sure. It seems like an eternity ago!

I'm attending north campus. If the students at the other campuses are treated worst, I sure feel sorry for them. I've had fabulous clinical instructors here. Simply phenomenal. However, I have heard horror stories from classmates at north campus. Best bet is to make friends with students ahead of you in the program and you'll know which clinical instructor to avoid. Some of the lecture instructors are disrespectful and quite condescending, which can be extremely frustrating. But you don't have to speak to them unless their your clinical instructor.

Thanks Waiting2be... Are you in the program now?

Where exactly is the nursing dept? Is it in the health science bldg? Who is it there I would see to ask- an advisor? Sorry for all the questions, I just know where Registration, Financial Aid, Admissions, Advisement, my classes, and the library are. Ha, I live in that library!

My sister took the Basic Core Health class at Sheridan and just completed it about 2 wks ago. She also just got her app in to BCC the week of 10/24. She verified that it would be ok and took the classes on line. She just had to take a CPR class in person and meet another time. She also had to write 2 short papers.

You should check for yourself but my sister took the class at SVT and BC accepted it with no problem. She did all of her tests online and emailed the instructor her papers.

Thanks for the info, NewGoal! I will double check, but I at least wanted to know that the possibilty did exist that I can take that course. That makes me feel better. Just a couple of questions regarding your post-

I was planning on taking the Basic Life Support class anyhow, and I think CPR is included in that course (right?) so you mentioned your sister having to take that. Was that required by Sheridan for that course? Also you said she had to write two papers....is that for the course as well?

Thanks again for the info!

I just spoke to my sister and she said that the CPR class was included in the class and the following CEUs are also included:

Domestic Violence

Prevention of Medical Errors

TB/Osha

The AIDs had to be taken separately. The Basic Core class was $210 at Sheridan, much cheaper than BCC.

The papers were only 1-2 paragraphs on Elder Abuse ie. Funding is given for Domestic Violence do you think that funding should be given for Elder Abuse.

The other subject was if you had a child who had alot of injuries and someone reported you to DCF, what would your reaction be and why.

She said that Sheridan class is 90hrs as opposed to BCC which is 75hrs because most of the required CEUS are required.

You get your Basic Health Care Provider CPR class, certificate that says you did Osha and TB for 6hrs, Hepatits update for 3hrs , Domestic HOurs and Medical Errors for 2 hrs each.

You only have to take the HIV class although on the certificate that you recieve for the 90hrs it says that this course includes 5hrs for HIV/AIDs, Bloodborne Pathogens, Tuberculosis standards.

She was unsure whether the HIV hrs would count so she took this CEU at BCCl

I hope that this helps.

P.S She said that if you take the class at Sheridan, when you do the online modules ,make sure that you jot down notes because at the end of the module, when you take the tests, she asks the most obscure questions.
