Applying to BCC Jan 2009

U.S.A. Florida

Hi Everyone,

Anyone else out there applying to Broward Community College for the Jan 2009 start date?!!! :clown:I'm so nervous and the application period hasn't even opened yet!

For those of you who were admitted on the point system, what kind of gpa did you have? Were any of you able to use your HOSA waiver? I know that they have eliminated the waiting list. I am going to meet with an advisor next Friday to look at my transfer credits. I hope I get in!

Well no, I specifically asked that because I was in the same situation. I went to the question/answer session in May and asked the Assoc. Dean in person about taking the class in the Fall after I turned in my application, but starting the course before the close of the deadline. She told me I could show I was enrolled to be able to apply, but since I had not completed the course, I would be put in line behind those who had - she said that would not be fair to those who had it completed.

Now, the deadline application for Broward has been extended to October 24th to include three pending HCP0130 classes which do not end until late October. Those students will be able to complete the course then apply with a completed class.

So I hauled myself down to Miami Dade each Saturday all summer long to get the class done...

She told me I could show I was enrolled to be able to apply, but since I had not completed the course, I would be put in line behind those who had - she said that would not be fair to those who had it completed.

Okay, we're saying the same thing. If the HCP course isn't completed, you need to show that you are enrolled.

I was able to get the HCP class waived, but after meeting with the advisor, I found out that my A&P 1 and 2 w/ Labs may not transfer in. :crying2: I had to send a copy of the course descriptions and hope that they accept it. If not I would have to find and take an A&P 1 class that is open this semester, take A&P2 next semester and apply during Fall 09 for the Jan 2010 program!:banghead:

Hello, I'm taking the HCP course and I would like to know the name of the textbook for it. I don't want to pay over $100 for it at the bookstore. If anyone can help me with that I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

Do you know if in the Broward program a nursing student attends the first half of two summer sessions? I can't figure out how they get all of those classes into 18 months? I have applied for the Jan 2009 session. Would you know which classes would be taken in the Winter 09, First half summer 09, Fall 09, and then winter 10? Do you know if there will be a class for the first half of summer 10? Just curious if anyone knows:)

I started in Jan 2008. Here's what my schedule looks like. Yours will probably be the same:

WINTER (Jan-May)

Nursing Process I (Jan-spring break)

Nursing Process II (March-May)

SUMMER

GI/GI (May -June) - 6 weeks

OFF (July-Aug)

FALL (Aug - Dec)

Specialty Rotation* (Aug - Oct)

Specialty Rotation* (Oct - Dec)

WINTER (Jan - May)

Specialty Rotation* (Jan-spring break)

Ortho- Neuro (March-May)

SUMMER

Cardio (May -June) - 6 weeks

Trends (July-Aug) - 6 weeks

* Specialty rotations include Pediatrics, OB, and Psych. The nursing department prefers that you remain on track. However, some students take the summers off. All of the classes are 8 weeks except the summer courses, which are 6 weeks. Two weeks may not seem like that much of a difference but it can be. I hope this helps!

Hi everyone,

I've heard that BCC has TABE testing, but is there also a HESI that the students must pass every semester or as an "exit exam"? Does BCC also administer the TEAS tests and what is(are) the TEAS?

I read a couple of previous threads here at Allnurses that many students had to take the HESI to pass each semester and if their scores were not high enough after the second attempt then they failed out of the nursing program. Is this true??? I cringe at that thought...

And back to the TABE--is this a one time test or is this something students must take every semester too???

Thanks!

TABE TESTING the tabe is taken in the begining of process one and last for two years . if you fail out the program those scores will get you back in.

IthinkIcan,

Thanks for your response. So I guess the TABE test has its advantages. I did a little research on-line and notice that it looks like a pretty basic test as others have said, which is good news!

Good luck in school!!!

...and so the waiting has begun! I know they say we won't receive the email until 2-4 weeks after October 24th but I check my email EVERYDAY 50 TIMES A DAY!!! Anyone else out there waiting with me?!?!

To those who are already in or graduated...how long did you wait before you were notified???

I think it was about 2 weeks before I got a reply. I was anxious and nervous, but once I went to the orientation, I felt completely overwhelmed. I hadn't completed the CE courses. If I wasn't accepted I was going to get a master's degree in another area. So, after orientation, I had to complete all of those courses, the physical, the 2 background checks and finger prints, some immunizations, and the drug screening.

Nonetheless, I got everything completed and went on to start the program.

Good luck and be prepared to read, read, read!
