Applying to BCC Jan 2009

Published

Hi Everyone,

Anyone else out there applying to Broward Community College for the Jan 2009 start date?!!! :clown:I'm so nervous and the application period hasn't even opened yet!

For those of you who were admitted on the point system, what kind of gpa did you have? Were any of you able to use your HOSA waiver? I know that they have eliminated the waiting list. I am going to meet with an advisor next Friday to look at my transfer credits. I hope I get in!

I am in the nursing program at BC (formerly BCC). As far as GPA, I have heard over several semesters that as long as you have a 3.0, you should have no problems getting in. I know it is stressful right now, it's that way for all of us, but just take a breath and relax, you should be fine. They send you an orientation date once you are accepted. The oriet. lasts several hours and they go over everything and let you ask questions. As for HOSA, you may be able to waive a few CAE classes and the core class. When you talk to your advisor, they will verify this for you. What campus are you applying to? Hopefully this helped you. Good luck and study, study, study! :wink2:

Hi!

Question for Lanal2--how do you like the program at BC? Are you satisfied with the education, teachers, etc. I'm hoping to have my pre-reqs out of they way in time to apply to the August 09 program. I kinda stumbled across this site and have read so many horror stories about BCC that I am curious to hear what a current nursing student has to say.

Good luck to you!

I'm currently attending BC's nursing program. The classes are challenging and some teachers can be difficult. Just do what they tell you and you'll be fine. Go in with a positive attitude and be prepared to work hard. Good Luck!:wink2:

I agree that the program is difficult, but it is do-able. Stay possitive and follow the course outlines and you will be fine. They have a good NCLEX pass rate, so as difficult as it seems, it sets you up to pass in the end. I have enjoyed my experience so far. Ignore the negativity and just focus on your goal. If you have any concerns, most of the professors are willing to sit down with you and discuss these. They aren't as "uncaring" as some people seem to want you to think. Good luck on your pre-req's, i'm sure you'll be just fine.

What classes do you still have to finish before applying? What are you taking now?

Hi Lanal2 & LeavingTeaching,

Thank you both for your responses--they are very encouraging. And it's great hearing from those who are in the mist of it.

For Lanal2--I am relatively new at being back in school (and new to this forum, too.), so far I've completed ENC1101, a humanities (I took Ethics), and MAT 0024, as I needed a refresher on algeabra--it's been about 18 years since high school. I am currently enrolled for CHM 1032 for the upcoming fall program and I'm considering enrolling into a psych class. It's going to take me awhile, as I will still have AP I & II, but unfortunetly I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth :chuckle. Plus, I figure this way I can focus on having an awsome GPA rather than trying to cram it all in and having my grades suffer. Thanks again!

If you want to take Psych, take Dr. Nash or Mrs. Shoemaker. Both are great teachers and it wont be too stressful. I came back to school in 2005 after approx. 14 years. I had a horrible CPT math score, which was a blessing because I had to start back at Pre-Alg. Now I am so glad I did it, because alg. and ratio/proportion is all nursing math. It is good that you got the refresher. It took me a while also, but you are smart to keep an eye on your GPA. Get it as high as you can before you start the program.

Feel free to message me anytime if you have questions or just want to B.S. about the program. Good luck, you'll get there brefore you know it.

Thanks everyone for your responses! :heartbeatI was able to get the HOSA credit and waiver!! YAAAAYYY!! :yeah: Thanks lanal2 for the input on gpa.

sayitaintso: the app period for Jan 09 is Aug. 1-Oct. 24. I'll keep you guys posted on my progress. We'll see how my appt with the advisor goes on thursday.

I'm trying to get into the North campus.

Hi Lanal2,

Thanks for the heads-up on the Psych proffessors. It's always good to have a teacher that is recommended by another student; otherwise, you never know who you will end up with. I will certainly keep those two in mind. It's really quite funny about the algeabra--it almost feels like learning another language. I swear, some of those equation--I've never seen in my life and the sad part is the tendency to forget it all so quickly.

I do have another question (or a couple of Qs) regarding the HCP class that requires 75 contact hours--How does that affect the overall GPA? Or does it? I mean--is is just for points or an actual letter grade. And what did you think of the class? Was it a lot of info to absorb in six weeks?

Also, prior to your applying to the nursing program, did you have to take a preadmission exam or did they do away with that. I'm a little unclear as to whether it's required for myself before applying.

And finally--(promise, this is the last one:)), did you do micro before applying, during the program, or are you going to wait until just before graduation? What are your recommendations concerning when the best time to take micro is?

Anyway, hope all is well and you are mastering  the skills! And please don't let my many questions interfere with your work--no rush on the reply.

Thanks again! :specs:
