Applying to BCC Jan 2009

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi Everyone,

Anyone else out there applying to Broward Community College for the Jan 2009 start date?!!! :clown:I'm so nervous and the application period hasn't even opened yet!

For those of you who were admitted on the point system, what kind of gpa did you have? Were any of you able to use your HOSA waiver? I know that they have eliminated the waiting list. I am going to meet with an advisor next Friday to look at my transfer credits. I hope I get in!

about the micro question i know its not required as a pre req but i noticed that alot of the students i was in class with did it right before they apply to the program, i guess the had finished up all their pre reqs so they took advantage of the spare time they had between applying and getting in..... dunno if that helped any

Hey MDEL08,

I'm in BCC's program as well. The HCP courses are not calculated in your GPA. There isn't a preadmissions exam yet, but I heard it was on the way. You do take the TABE Test, which is the same test used for the GED, but not until you're already in the program. As far as micro, I STRONGLY recommend that you take it as well as the other general education classes required before starting the program. I'm taking micro now during my summer break from the nursing program. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone. It's doable, but I could really use a break right now. Good luck.

Hi Sayitaintso & LeavingTeaching,

Thank you both for your responses concering the micro class and preaddmission examination into the nursing program. After reading both of your posts--I will certainly take the micro class before applying.

Question for LeavingTeaching--Sorry your not able to take the summer off, but, look at the bright side, micro will be over with soon, as summer is nearing an end. Anyway, on to my question--What is a TABE test and I wonder why this test is given to the nursing students??? Guess you really have to jump through hoops to stay in the program?! Also, one other question--what is the grading scale there at BCC. Is it correct that anything less than a 77% is considered a C, which I've read is "failing"?

Anyway, back to work. Thank you both again for the information. :)

Are you talking about the regular RN classes or the LPN to RN transtion classes? ....and is micro a required pre classes to take because im getting different answers .

if i remember well and from looking on my past syllabus,

A=90% and up

B=80%-89%

C=70%-79%

D=60%-69%

F=59% and below

im pretty sure this is how it is for all the classes but someone might correct me if i'm wrong

MDEL08,

I wouldn't necessarily recommend taking micro before applying. You can complete the pre-reqs, apply, and take micro during the semester that you're waiting to be accepted.

TABE is the same test used to obtain a GED. We were told that if you don't score a 12 or higher on the TABE and fail a class, you have to retake it and score above a 12 before you retake the course. I believe the TABE is administered to determine the reading levels of those in the program to try to determine who is cheating. I've heard instructors say, "I know people are cheating because they are reading at the 4th grade level and getting A's or B's on tests."

sayitaintso & MDEL08,

The grading scale is not the 10 point system. I believe a 72%=C, 83%=B, 92%=A, 71 or below=you get to do it again.

NMDGURL,

At BC (formely BCC), micro is a general education course that must be completed prior to graduation. At some schools, it is a pre-req and must be completed prior to apply, but not at BC.

Hi guys!

Here's a link to some information on the HCP and CAE classes that are needed after being accepted but prior to the start of the program:

I'm sooo excited about meeting with the advisor today. :clown: Can any of you tell me how you paid for your program? Did you get a lot of grants or a few loans? I will be a 2nd bacc student and don't even want to think about how much I owe from my grad degree. My job has an excellent program which will pay for my program and pay me my salary while I'm in school, but I'll have to work for them for 2-3 years.:rolleyes:

Regarding HCP0130.... when I went to the question/answer session with Assoc. Dean Bonnie Dones I was told you do not HAVE to have HCP0130 done prior to application, but it will affect your place in line if you do not have it done yet. You will be put behind the people who DO have it completed....

If the HCP course isn't completed, you have to show that you are enrolled in it or health science admissions will not accept the application. Maybe that's what she meant.
