Hi,
I am about to finish my 2nd semester of the ADN program here in Texas. I have applied for a summer CNA position. The lady just called me and asked if I was still interested in the position, and I said definitely! She then tells me they will start the background check and that takes about 48hrs. I am not worried about a criminal background check...but they will do a credit check also. I had fair credit before going back to school, but since school, my credit has gone south b/c of strained finances that go along with being a single mom/fulltime student.
I really need this summer job!!! Can a hospital not hire you b/c of bad credit?
Any advice/encouragement is greatly appreciated!!!
I am unable to sleep due to various stress factors in my life right now....and now I have to wait 48hrs before I know if I get the job or not!!??!!
anyone else been in this situation before? if so, how did it turn out?
thanks!

I used to be in HR prior to this career change and typically the only time a credit check will affect you getting the job is when the job entails handling money. Unless the facility is really strict, you should be o.k. Not much cash handling involved in patient care. :)

don't know how bad is bad but if you get this job try and clean up as much as you can you will need a good credit rating for student loans, apt acceptance and many other things...
i hope that you get the job...good luck

Credit check? That's the strangest thing I've ever heard as far as nursing jobs or related jobs TO nursing go. It makes no sense to me.

Might be because we often work with vulnerable populations. I know it is common to check credit in LTC. Many of the elderly residents keep money/valuables in their rooms, particularly in the non-skilled care setting.
I still don't understand the credit check. I mean doesn't the police records check for the vulnerables sector satisfy them that you're not a threat? What does a crappy credit history have to do with anything? So someone didn't pay up on their phone bill......someone's BF took off on the and stuck them with 5 months rent and they couln't pay it.
To clarify....it is credit card debt that has ruined my credit. I had to max out a card to get a new engine for my car (only way I had to pay for it), and then could not afford to keep up even minimum payments...this happened about 2yrs ago. and it is the same with about 4 credit cards...however I have kept one credit card good.
also she had said that after the background check came back, she would call me back and discuss a start date. so... wait and see. hoping I hear something by friday. thanks for all your replies. :)

The original posted should've questioned "why credit check?" from the start...
I know in Connecticut they don't ask for that unless I'm not aware of it. Bad enough that job is straining what more could they ask for?....my ecouragement, don't worry about them not hiring because of your credit, go elsewhere and apply, your role is needed!

Every healthcare job I have ever applied for I had to consent to a credit check.
Well it looks like I'll never get hired.
Boy.....jobless before I even hit the market.

Ditto.
We had this discussion somewhere before and talked about credit status also affecting car insurance rates. For right or wrong, TPTB extrapolate a lot based on whether or not bills are paid on time.

Twinbee, from my experience working in management I know that when some places say they are going to do a background check it is usually only a criminal background check. Even though they say they are going to do a credit check they usually don't unless the position has to do with handling financial information or cash transactions. It costs them money to hit the credit bureaus every time they do a credit check, and if they did one for everybody who applies for a job it would cut real deep into their budget at the end of the year.
Trust me when I tell you that management is loathe to spend money on stuff like this. Some of them are so tight when it comes to money that they aren't willing even to pay for a national criminal background check. All they do is a quick thing with the state DMV and that's about it.
My crystal ball is out for repairs right now, but I think you are going to get the job.
