How's everyone doing with their Apps?
I applied to MHCC, CCC, PCC and Linfield.
It's my first year applying and I'm a nervous wreck!!!
How long does it usually take to hear whether or not you got an interview?
I was glad to see CCC changed their deadline to Feb 15th like the other OCNE schools-I think it'll make the waiting more bearable!
Anyone else want to share points to see how tight the competition is this year?
Other than Mt. Hood, I don't get too many discretionary points.
Heres what I *think* I have (figuring them myself):
MHCC-63 points
CCC-50 or 51 points depending on how they round up your gpa
PCC-54 points
Good luck everyone!!!
Let the nail biting, stalking the mailbox begin!
1977, how'd you find out about how much clackamas is? Just called the nursing dept? Seems like a steal! Wow...the way I look at it, you're still getting a BSN from OHSU (on paper) through the cc programs. I'm also a believer that you get out of your education what you put into it, no matter how fancy the program (to a point, ha). That's a tough decision -- sorry you're in this spot! If you decide clackamas, I'll see you at orientation!
Oh, K - that's a tough spot. For me, I chose OHSU's higher tuition (I have another degree, too) for the benefits that graduating their BSN program will offer, including attending a top-ranked nursing school, good health insurance, and a doctorally educated staff and an extra year of clinical time, versus the mostly-theory year for the RN-BS year. It's a trade off, and I completely agree that you get out of any program what you put in - the community colleges in the area have great reputations. Good luck to you on your decision!
For what it's worth....I've done the Ivy League super expensive education experience, and the budget state school education experience. At the end of the day, it's up to you. With respect to me....stick me in a cave with the materials, and I'll show up on test day and jam out an A. I can appreciate having world renowned instructors (as I've actually had a few like that), but at the end of the day, it didn't make a difference for me. Give me the book. I'll read it and learn the material as well as anyone. If that's the kind of person you are, then save your money and go to a community college. If, on the other hand, you feel that you need a lot of attention, drop the money for the big name school.
Has anyone who interviewed at CCC not received a letter yet? I live in Portland and my initial interview invite letter arrived the day after it was mailed. It is now Thursday, letters apparently have gone out and I've received nothing. Would it be inappropriate to call?
I received my CCC letter on Tuesday. If I were you, I'd call if it doesn't come today, or if you can stand the wait, tomorrow. Waiting is horrible. Hope it shows up soon!
Hey guys, I was accepted to PCC, CCC, MHCC, and OHSU. Since I have a choice, MHCC and PCC are out. I've heard such great things about CCC. Having said that, I accepted OHSU already and sent in a non-refundable deposit. After finding out what OHSU can offer me as far as funding for a program, I don't think I can justify taking out 40K+ in student and private loan debt. I would be swimming in student loan payments at the end. I have a prior degree and already have student loan debt. OHSU is 17K a year. I found out this morning that CCC is approximately 11K for TWO years. I would assume the third year at OHSU would still be around 17K. When you consider in the end you have the same degree, 28K vs. 51+K. I'm wringing my hands over this. I feel so honored to be accepted to OHSU, but I have to do what's right for me financially, and maybe if I decline, it will give someone on the wait list an opportunity to go that has the means to do so.I went from walking on air for a week to feeling really sad the past few days. If anyone else made this decision in the past or relates to me, I would appreciate any advice or sharing of a similar decision you once made.
Thank-you, k1977
I understand it's a difficult situation but look at it this way - at least you are going through this while you can still change your mind! Follow your gut and do what feels right for you. It is a great honor to be accept to OHSU but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with choosing something else! I am in a somewhat similar situation in that I have a choice between two schools, one of which I adore as an institution and feel very loyal to, but the other has in my opinion a better reputation as far as the actual nursing program for both of these schools. I think in the end you have to think of yourself and choosing the program you feel is right for you, financially and otherwise. Good luck
k-1977, how do you know how much OHSU is offering you financially? Did you get your financial aid packet already?
If you haven't gotten your fin. aid packet yet and are basing your decision strictly on how much the tuition cost for each school, I'd say give yourself another week or two, esp since you've already paid the deposit for OHSU. Wait until you get the fin.aid packet and then decide. You never know what kind of scholarships (or maybe grants) they can award you that can help lower your tuition. You never know. OHSU may award you enough aid (not counting loans) to make the tuition comparable to what CCC is charging.

Not trying to influence you either way (though, full disclosure, I didn't apply to any CC programs because I definitely wanted the BSN and didn't want to take the extra year), but don't forget to consider that extra year--during which you could be working full time. If you do an OCNE thing, you are starting work in fall 2014 with $28K of debt. If you go straight to OHSU, you can start work making $60-65K per year in fall 2013 with $51K of debt--keep living like a college student and pay it off within a year or two. The way I see it, you come out $37,000 ahead. That was my thought process in my planning. Some might say you can work during that bridge year (can you? I don't actually know), but nobody's hiring ADNs anyway. At any rate, there's certainly no call to be sad, dude. Most everyone here is taking on debt as a result of this path, a sucky means to a great end. And having a wealth of options is a GOOD thing. Just pick one and don't second-guess yourself. Congratulations!

Just throwing this out there -- if someone has to borrow $51K, it's not likely that they'll be able to pay it off in 1-2 years. Just sayin'.
