Applicants to Portland area schools 2011

Published

How's everyone doing with their Apps?

I applied to MHCC, CCC, PCC and Linfield.

It's my first year applying and I'm a nervous wreck!!!

How long does it usually take to hear whether or not you got an interview?

I was glad to see CCC changed their deadline to Feb 15th like the other OCNE schools-I think it'll make the waiting more bearable!

Anyone else want to share points to see how tight the competition is this year?

Other than Mt. Hood, I don't get too many discretionary points. :(

Heres what I *think* I have (figuring them myself):

MHCC-63 points

CCC-50 or 51 points depending on how they round up your gpa

PCC-54 points

Good luck everyone!!!

Let the nail biting, stalking the mailbox begin! :lol2:

Hey everyone I am 25 on waitlist at Pcc. Is that a realistic chance? Anyone get in at Pcc and declining it? Thanks

I'm so happy I was accepted into PCC!!! I have loved taking my prerequisities there and am thrilled that I will have an awesome 5 minute commute! Plus nearly every instructor I have ever had at PCC has been caring, compassionate, and excellent...and I hear the same about the nursing faculty.

I am so grateful to have the opportunity and all of us who got accepted into any program are so blessed.

And, any of you who did not make it into a program this year...keep perservering, get your CNA license and begin working, volunteer in a healthcare setting, study hard and retake classes if necessary.... it is very commom for it to take multiple years to get into nursing school. PERSERVERE and do what you need to do to be a stronger applicant next year. Don't give up. Believe in yourself.

Happy :redpinkhe :yeah: :redpinkhe :yeah:

Does anyone know what the program cost is at CCC and PCC?

I just got word from a friend of mine, she received acceptance into PCC as well BUT she was also accepted at Linfield and she is going with the latter, so there is another opening available for PCC.

I want to know how much CCC or PCC would cost too.

Does anyone know when it comes to applying for nursing jobs how much of an advantage does one get between 3 years of BSN in OHSU versus 2 years in a community college plus the last year for the Bachelor's continued through OHSU?

I just want to know if that makes such a big difference because eventually the comm.college program will still end in OHSU for the bachelor's. Any thoughts? I'm perplexed:confused:

OHSU is about 17K per year. 51K is a lot of $$, especially for those of us w/ former degrees and existing student loan debt.

I did my prerequisites at PCC and will finish my CNA a Clackamas (CCC) tomorrow morning. So here are my 2 cents. First the facilities at CCC are the best in town beautiful new building and labs. Two of my CNA instructors teach in the RN program and are top notch technically and very supportive personally. PCC was also a good experience but in my opinion it's a very big program (too big for me). Just me but because of the cohort size (40), nice facilities, staff that I now know, and my interactions at the interview, if it were down to PCC and CCC I would personally pick CCC.

You have a great problem - enjoy it - you have worked hard to get it.

I know this post wasn't to me but thank you for the feedback! I too have taken pre-req's at PCC as well as worked at the college for years, and the thought of turning them down kills me! However I have heard great things about MHCC and everyone I've talked to who goes/has gone there highly recommends it. Don't want to sound like I am complaining but this is going to be a very tough decision!!

Hey I'm pretty sure I'll be declining pcc so u can move up the list!

Hi k1977,

there is also the distance+parking issue with OHSU (being the least part to worry I guess). Let me know if you find out more about it also. Congrats! [-:

I've worked at OHSU for 4 years now -- don't even try to park here. There's like a 7-year waitlist to get a parking permit, which will still cost you $150/month or something crazy like that. Daily parking on the hill is $11, and it's not guaranteed that there will be spots. There's a cheaper lot on the waterfront, which is $7 daily, but you still have to either walk or take a shuttle to the tram to get up to hill. It's kind of a hassle. Trimet passes are heavily subsized by OHSU for this reason, and I'd guess that most of the students go for this option. It's really easiest to deal with this campus by bus, even if it means driving to a transit center and catching a bus there; this is what I do and it cuts the commute time considerably. No matter what you do, be patient. :) Good luck!;)

I got into CCC and PCC! : ) I'm not sure which school to choose, as I didn't really have a preference. Any arguments for/against either school? My husband and I will be moving to the area of the school I choose to attend, so driving distances aren't a problem.

I haven't seen the PCC facilities, but the CCC facilities seemed brand new to me. Maybe schedule a tour? I'll be going to CCC. One concern I have is that since it's not on the main campus, there's not a full-sized library. There's a resource library, which would work in a pinch, but not necessarily for long hours of studying. CCC also has a class of 40, which is half the size of PCC; it sounds like you get a lot of personalized attention there because of this. The interviewers said that they get to know their students really well, and we get to know them really well, "sometimes more than we'd like." ha! Ultimately, I'm really excited to go to CCC and I think it'll be a great environment for me. That said, I don't know a whole lot about PCC's program. Just my :twocents:. :)

I want to know how much CCC or PCC would cost too.

It is my understanding the community college programs here are very well respected and known to be rigorous and really prepare you. It's also rumored that if you do your RN (ie do your full three years) at OHSU that is where you will get a job, so it depends on where you hope to work.

I do think that a potential employer will understand the difference between having done all your years at OHSU versus just having finished your BSN there after transferring from a two-year school - from what I've heard the BSN completion is online and mostly theory. Most of your clinical training would have come from your RN years. So in that case I think it would make a difference in the event that a potential employer has a preference for graduates from certain programs, rather than just looking at the candidates gpa, resume, interview etc. That all depends on the employer and probably varies. My friend who works at Adventist hospital said he works with quite a few MHCC grads, but that may be related to the fact that it is an MHCC clinical site. Hope that helps.

I've been trying to do some research on this for CCC. Their website is actually pretty horribly organized and doesn't give much info at all, but I did find the Fall preview for 2011 here: http://www.clackamas.cc.or.us/documents/CCCFallPreview2011.pdf . Next to each class it gives the total cost for it (including the fees), although I haven't been able to find what classes would all make up Fall term. I see 2 so far, but it's only 9 credits. There's probably additional fees, too, like technology fees, student activity fees, blah blah blah...but this at least gives some sort of idea. I wish orientation was sooner than June 10! :yeah:
