I posted recently using this term. I want to apologize for using it without knowing what it really means to you. I am (relatively) new to nursing - I have mostly worked as a scientist. Clearly it's not a nice thing to say, and I am sorry for titling my post with those words.
Best to you.
Well, thank you for that. It is, to me , a phrase losing its punch because of over and inappropriate use. I hope you're able to work out the frustration you've experienced.

I will. Thank you.

No sweat. I imagine it's hard coming into a new website and not really knowing the mores and unspoken etiquette.

Thank you! I know when I first came here as a new nurse all those many years ago, this was all pretty foreign to me. And I was 40!
Hope you get your troubles figured out.

Ok, I'll bite. What's a NETY?
Found it. Why is that bad?
Ehh. That's ok, it's giving me a headache reading old posts about it..

I'm guessing you haven't come here often since joining several years ago if you have been lucky enough to miss the goodness knows how many NETY threads. And yes, read enough of them and it is definitely head ache inducing!
To the OP [original poster just in case you aren't aware yet what that means] thanks for so quickly recognizing what a hot button topic that is and apologizing for throwing it out there. Welcome to AN!

I one day aspire to go from Floor Nurse to Crusty Old Bat that proudly and openly practices the delicate artform of NETY - crushing the dreams of special little snowflakes.
Someone please read my sarcasm and just take a joke. =)
Thank you for understanding, guys.

Funny thing is, before I had ever even joined this site, I had a CI who said this during lecture.
It leads me to believe it's not just unique to the Internet. It's an urban nursing myth spread in different nursing practices across the board.
