Anyone waiting on acceptance letter from Tidewater Community College VA

Published

Hi Im a student at TCC and I submitted my application in middle end of April, just wondering how long it normally takes to hear something, I am waiting everyday for the mailman about to drive myself loco. Is anyone else waiting for there letter from TCC. Please share with me.

And don't forget, the uniform tops run HUGE!!!! I don't know how they take the measurements, but order carefully.

al7139,

Thanks for your comments. I'm doing great grade wise in 108, but I am not loving the instructors or the way the program is structured right now. I've spent some time wondering if I made the right decision to attend this program. Theres no turning back though, so I'm glad to hear that you are proud you stuck with TCC. One question, at what point, if ever, did you get the feeling that anyone (instructor or advisor) cared whether you passed or failed? or even cared about students opinions at all? I'm asking too much aren't I? I've written on my notebook "VALIDATE YOURSELF!" I intend to follow that advise through out this program. See you on the otherside!:smokin:

im glad to hear that you are doing good grade wise in 108. who do you have as an instructor if you don't mind me asking, and what are your study habits, i start 108 in march just trying to be prepared. i had a friend in 108 in the august class and she didn't do well at all in fact she got an F. so im just trying to find out everybody's study habits and what i need to do.

im so happy. I don't know if anyone works for sentara hospital but they have a new program called CAP (College Access Program) its a scholarship offered through sentara for RN's and some other health care fields. I was awarded the scholarship for $10,000 I do my contract signing on friday. :yeah::bow::monkeydance::caduceus::hpygrp::stdnrsrck:

Butterfly,

Congratulations on your scholarship.:yeah: I, like an idiot, left Sentara to work for an "affiliate" of Sentara, my pal time and other benefits went with me so I assumed I was eligible for CAP. After I sent in my application I was told that I infact was NOT eligible. My credit card bill is going to be ridiculous at the end of this!.

For Nur 108, regardless of what your schedule says, two instructors teach the course together, they split up the subjects and one will lecture, then the other. There are two other instructors who do labs and clinicals, but you'll be assigned to one of the main two for advising. My first piece of advice for this course is to get organized. You'll get a course outline and a calender for the whole semester. Use that to organize yourself. It takes a minute to get used to the NCLEX style of testing, so be patient with yourself. I do the assigned reading, and then correlate that with the lecture notes. There are a TON of lecture notes. lots and lots and lots of information. Know your learning style and utilize suggestions for that style to digest the information. I found out I'm a kinesthetic learner, so I have to interact with my notes. I use a white board to track concepts, index cards for definitions. There are CDs with the book, I do all the quizzes with that. These are things that help me. you've got to find what works for you.

Good luck!!!!!

Thanks so much for the information. I have one more question for you. You know I work for sentara and the department that i work for we are open 24 hrs a day. They are giving me a lot of grief about my school schedule and everything. I am full time employee right now and i know i have to continue to work for sentara to keep my scholarship. What kind of hours do you work. Because with 108 I would have to work like 3-10pm, so im just wondering if this is possible. I don't have any children so i don't really have to worry about that, also I was wondering if maybe i can work as a NCP (nurse care partner) and maybe have a little more flexiblility.

I have a question. Did you work during the program? I work for sentara hospital in Norfolk. and I was just awarded the scholarship with sentara which i am very thankful for put i have to continue to work at least full or part time to keep my scholarship. and i assume the hours for nursing class are a little crazy and im just trying to figure out how to work. I am sure there is no way i can work 3rd shift. and that only leaves me to work until 10pm at night. I need some advice.

Hi to everyone who has posted here.

I am a graduate of the TCC nursing program (2007) from before they started the whole "Cohort" thing.

I hear lots of you asking about taking required classes other than nursing while in nursing school. My recommendation is to finish all your other courses before starting the nursing classes. The nursing classes and clinicals will take up all your time once you start and those I know who have tried to do both have had a difficult time with it.

I got everything else out of the way first, but if you cant' at least get the tough ones finished (A&P classes and micro).

For studying, get a group or a friend you can have regular sessions with. This is also great for practicing your assessment skills. We would have weekend get togethers to practice our assessments and to study for tests. I also highly recommend using the CD's that come with your books. Lots of them are geared towards visual learners, so what you may not understand in lectures, you can get from the CD. Also the campus library has an extensive video collection for clinical skills.

In lecture, some of the instructors allow tape recorders, while others do not. If they allow taping, it is very helpful so you know you can go back in case you miss something. If they do not allow taping, it is helpful to read ahead, then you can get the gist of the lecture ahead of time, and be able to key in on pertinent info.

Be aware that unlike other classes and tests, you will not be just regurgitating facts. There are gray areas, so you will have to pick the best answer out of 4 or 5, and sometimes they may all be right but there is one that is more right that the others. In your second year you will see test questions that you will need to give more than one answer to. In order to pass most tests, you need to be able to use your critical thinking skills to come up with the right answer, not just memorize facts, although there are tests where you will give a factual answer in some cases.

Also you will have heard by now the quote "C=RN". For those of you (like myself) that had a perfect GPA (or close to it) prior to starting nursing school, get over it! I quickly resigned myself to being an average student (a B-C average). Nursing school is HARD, but you can graduate with a C and still be a nurse. I graduated with a low B, but came very close to a C. When you look for your first nursing job, they do not look at your GPA, they just want a degree (or diploma) from an accredited school, and a copy of your liscense (or your elligibility to take the NCLEX-RN).

All I can say is that I did not always like my instructors or the program, but it was well worth it in the end, and I am very proud to be a graduate of the TCC Nursing School.

Let me know if I can help any of you out in any way with studying, etc.

Good luck to you all!

Amy

I work 12 hr nights on the weekends. I'm sick of it all ready, so I'm in the process of changing that. I personally think that 3-11 would be okay. I'm not sure how you could do 40 hrs a week and nursing school. but part time is doable. (just my opinion). My experience has been that Im out most days by 2:15 or 2:30. I do a day clinical. Some people have the evening clinical so its different for them.

ok guys so we have about a month left before cohort 4 starts. Are you excited or nervous? To be honest im a little of both of them. So I want to hear from anyone that was in Cohort groups 1,2, or 3, give us some ideas on what to expect, tips on studying etc. Also I wanted to know if anyone purchased their books yet, wow they are expensive, i also got the nursing skills pack its interesting. I have already started looking in my Strategries, Techniques or whatever book. This 2 year journey is going to be interesting. So i want to hear from you guys.

I am so excited. Another term completed. YEAAAAA:yeah: Good luck to everyone starting cohort 4.

My advice is to enjoy your last week of freedom to relax--and sleep--while you can :) And use the CDs/DVDs that come with the textbooks--you'd be surprised how many questions from them make appearances on the tests!
