Anyone waiting on acceptance letter from Tidewater Community College VA

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi Im a student at TCC and I submitted my application in middle end of April, just wondering how long it normally takes to hear something, I am waiting everyday for the mailman about to drive myself loco. Is anyone else waiting for there letter from TCC. Please share with me.

Well guys i just wanted to come and update you on how orientation went fort those that are wondering. We went over the TCC nursing student handbook. We filled out a couple of forms and paperwork. We also went over uniform requirements. We also talked about what to expect, from nursing school, and what can absolutely get you kicked out of the program. Everything was really informative and i can't wait to get started. Im in cohort 4 so im still a little confused about what year we actually graduate, because my paperwork said Dec. 2011, so im not sure. Hopefully they will go over it the first day of class. I will keep you informed.

Hey meriwhen,

I signed up for next semester nur 130 and 170. Whats the deal with the 12 hour clinicals? do you have a choice? 1 12hr or 2 6hr?

Hey butterfly82 ! Nice to meet you!!!!

1|dowife: how hard is NUR 108?

Do you all think it's possible to work part-time on weekends while in the program?

Hey meriwhen,

Depends on the instructor. Some instructors go by what you register for in SIS when assigning hours; others will just assign you to clinical groups however they see fit. Some are very flexible about letting you switch clinical groups to get the hours you want (or at least can tolerate). Others will listen to your reasons and then tell you, "This is where you are going, deal with it." Keep in mind that clinical groups can only have a certain number of students in them, so it's impossible to accomodate everyone's preferences.

I don't know who is doing 130, but Smith (170) used to be pretty flexible...then again, it's been a long time since I was in 170. It can get frustrating. Every instructor seems to do things the opposite of the instructor prior, so you never really know what to expect.

It's best if you learn to leave your Tuesday and Thursdays from 6am-9pm as free as possible, so you can accomodate whatever clinicals they throw at you. If you have to switch, try to do it as early as possible...and it helps if, before you approach the instructor, you found a classmate who is willing to switch their clinical with yours.

And fair warning: as you progress further in the program, they begin to ignore the "I have kids!" excuse. Doesn't matter if you're married, single parent, military parent--they've heard it so much they started warning new classes about it at orientation. So if you don't have flexible/reliable childcare for clinical days already, find it.

I think it should be December 2010, not 2011.

Cohort 1 finishes in May 2010

Cohort 2: July 2010

Cohort 3: October 2010

Cohort 4: December 2010

Meriwhen,

Thanks. I prefer the 2 day a week thing, but I just signed up for what was available. I'm not that pressed one way or the other. No childcare issues. There is one clinical site, I'd prefer not to attend, but I'm getting from the look on the instructor's faces, that they are not really interested in personal problems or issues with the program. So I will go where Im told, when Im told, period.

Mikecap,

nurs 108, not to bad. I'm hearing from some of the newbies(new to the medical field) that they feel a little lost with all the terminology. Lots and lots of reading. I am struggling a bit with the lectures, notes seem be to all over the place. You HAVE to do the reading and then sythesize the lecture notes and book notes. You'll hear over and over to go by the book, but they give you a ton a lecture notes. Now in week 4, Im starting to get the hang of it. Get organized from the start, you'll be happier. Labs are a lot of fun and everyone seems more relaxed when we're doing hands on stuff. The simulation lab is a blast!!!

As for working? I work 12 hr shifts every friday and Saturday night. It sucks because tests are almost always on Mondays and I get very little studying done on the weekend, by Sunday, I'm fried. I have just requested to go flex and I'm gonna try 1 night a week instead of 2. I'm also looking for something less demanding, and possibly something during the week in the evening. there is only one clinical group in the evening for this course and they basically asked who wanted it. I didn't, so Im truely done by 2:30 every day. I think I'm rambling a bit but, if you have the type of job where you can get some studying done while your there, you should be okay. or if your the type who studies hard all week and can skip weekend studying, you'll also be fine.

Hey MikeCap it was nice to meet you also. I am sooo ready to get started. I am also a little afraid of NUR 108. I work full time right now but I know my hours will have to be reduced in order for me to be successful in the class. I will see you in March. Take care.

oh and someone said there was a wait list about 2-3 years? It seems that some of you didn't wait at all and got in right away!

They have no waiting list at all. They go by GPA as well as a point system. You have to have at least 9 pts to get into the program. The points mainly come from science courses. Many people get in without having micro even A&P sometimes. Again if you have enough points before you before you take micro or anatomy then you could very well get into the program. Its not hard at all getting into the program as long as you have everything completed. I got in on the first try.

Good luck i hope this was helpful.
