Anyone Up For Random FACT THROWING??

Let's have some fun learning. Each person should throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember" before taking your finals, HESI, NCLEX, etc.

Updated:

OK I know this sounds stupid but I have a friend that gets really freaked out before big tests like finals, HESI, NCLEX, and usually we get together and a few days before I start throwing out random facts at her. On 2 different tests she said the only way she got several questions was from the random facts that I threw at her that she never would have thought of!

SOOOOO..... I thought that if yall wanted to do this we could get a thread going and try to throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember". NCLEX is coming and the more I try to review content the more I realize that I have forgotten so......here are my 5 random facts for ya:

OH and BTW these came from rationales in Kaplan or Saunders no made up stuff:

1️⃣ A kid with Hepatitis A can return to school 1 week within the onset of jaundice.

2️⃣ After a patient has dialysis they may have a slight fever...this is normal due to the fact that the dialysis solution is warmed by the machine.

3️⃣ Hyperkalemia presents on an EKG as tall peaked T-waves

4️⃣ The antidote for Mag Sulfate toxicity is ---Calcium Gluconate

5️⃣ Impetigo is a CONTAGEOUS skin disorder and the person needs to wash ALL linens and dishes seperate from the family. They also need to wash their hands frequently and avoid contact.

Oh, ohh, one more...

? Vasopressin is also known as antidiuretic hormone

The increased levels of ketones are due to lack of glucose which results in diabetic ketoacidosis.

Okay a lack of glucose taken in by the cells in which insulin facilitates the action of it, and the body breaks down muscle for fuel due to lack of glucose thus ketones form...duh...:smackingf:omy:

Disregard my last question.

diabetic ketoacidosis (dka) is a life-threatening condition that develops when cells in the body are unable to get the sugar (glucose) they need for energy, such as when you have [color=#04a101]diabetes and do not take enough insulin. without insulin, the body cannot use sugar for energy. when the cells do not receive sugar, the body begins to break down fat and muscle for energy. when this happens, [color=#04a101]ketones, or fatty acids, are produced and enter the bloodstream, causing the chemical imbalance (metabolic acidosis) called diabetic ketoacidosis.

your blood sugar may be quite high before you notice symptoms, which include:sx,

  • flushed, hot, dry skin.
  • blurred vision.
  • drowsiness or difficulty waking up. young children may lack interest in their normal activities.
  • rapid, deep breathing.
  • a strong, fruity breath odor (similar to nail polish remover or acetone).
  • loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and vomiting.
  • confusion.

The patient is having a seizure and the nurse administers dilantin IV as an anticonvulsant the priority action is to assess for infiltration because it can cause erosion of the tissues and even loss of a limb

a patient is admitted for a possible cerebral bleed and has vitals taken every hour to monitor neuro status which assessment gives the nurse the most information on the extent of her bleeding

pupillary checks reflect functioning of the 3rd cranial nerve, which stretches as it becomes displaced with blood

Here is a fact I just found, but didn't know. It makes since once you read it though.

For Acute MI or MI in general do not give pain meds IM as it can/will raise the CK. This is due to muscle damage from the IM injection, so it can cause the CK which is already going up due to the MI to go higher.

I do love this site.

caduet (amlodipine and atorvastatin)

lotrel (amlodipine and benazepril hydrchloride)

cardizemsr, kilacor xr, taztia, tiazac (diltiazem)

lexxel (enalapril maleate-felodipine er)

plendil (felodipine)

dynacirc (isradipine)

cardene (nicardipine)

adalat, procardia xl (nifedipine)

sular (nisoldipine)

calan sr, isoptin sr (verapamil)

notice the chemical name ends with pine

possible side effects of all listed above include;

dizziness, h/a, redness in the face (flushing),

peripheral edema, rapid h/r, constipation

when combining calcium channel blocker with an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ace) inhibitor may reduce symptoms of edema.
