Anyone taking summer classes?

Published

Hi everyone! I am in the Phoenix area and taking my pre reqs right now. I am taking Introductory Algebra and English 101 first part of summer and Intermediate Algebra second part of summer. I struggle with math big time just wondering if anyone had any tips for being able to actually understand algebra and maybe for the first time in my life get an A in math lol.

Good day, Stephlynn:

When I changed my attitude on math, it made a world of difference in terms of doing the homework, studying, and taking tests; it was like night and day. I found Khan Academy to be helpful as well as youtube videos; and I made sure to put in the time doing the homework... even extra problems. I also found putting things on quizlet to be helpful. MATH051 - Intermediate Algebra flashcards | Quizlet was what I put together for my intermediate algebra class if that helps.

Thank you.

In the pre-req stages.

Taking Chem 100(Intro to Chem), Psych 101 and SOC 290 (Cultural Diversity)

Than I'll be applying to an ADN Program for next Spring.

Math is awful. I hate it, always have. But it's a critical skill in nursing, so...... Somehow I managed last year to pass Math for Allied Health with an A. Have passed both my dosage calc exams in the first year of the nursing program. You can do it, just practice practice practice. And I am taking psych nursing over the summer to cut down on my Fall course load. Class of 2015!!!!

If you are taking them at PCC PM me for some advice on math instructors!

I was out of school for over 20 years before I decided to go back and the first semester I had intermediate algebra and was surprised at the massive amount of homework that had to be done. That was done because math is one of those classes that you have to do repetitively in order to truly understand it and once you comprehend it, you will like it.

From my experience, people who say they do not like math say so as a result of not being good at it, however once you are proficient at it you will like it. I personally love math now, so much that I have chemistry and algebra phone apps that I play when I am bored. The challenge for me now is to not use a calculator and solve it in my head. Remember the key to success in math is to do it over and over again.

Yep! Repetition was the key in math. I got an A in Calculus by doing every single problem in the book, whether it was assigned or not.

Do you have to take the intro to Algebra over summer? I know sometimes we have to plow through our pre-reqs in order to finish our personal deadlines. I ask, because you mentioned that you took Algebra on-line and did not pass the class. I am wondering if you can plug a different pre-req in for summer, and take algebra during a full semester. My thought is that you can truly build solid skills and then consider taking either intermediate algebra or stats during next summer. I totally understand if that doesn't work, but just thought I would throw that out there to give you the opportunity to absorb the class during a full semester.

I also believed I wasn't good at math, however that changed as soon as I invested the time, energy and effort into working my butt off to get it! :) I started with pre-algebra and worked my way through stats with A's and I can say I LOVE math! I used a tutor when needed, I chose my professor's carefully, I took the initiative to teach myself when no one was around. This meant utilizing the gazillion tools on line, from you-tube, khanacademy, purplemath.com, and so many others.

You will have to stay very focused to plow through summer, but I think it can be done! Good luck!

Ill third the suggestion of watching youtube/Khan academy videos. Teachers at my college are normally pretty nice about helping you if you go during their office hours. Check ratemyproffesor to make sure you get a good teacher who doesn't mind giving extra help.

I'm taking statistics, A&P1, and microbiology with lab this summer. A fun course load to squeak by with prereqs for my nursing application deadlines.

I'm taking (on-line) elementary algebra and English 101 this summer, then on to intermediate algebra and the first of my science w/ lab courses in the fall.

I use youtube. Their are teachers that are very good. luck

I just finished all of my prereqs for all of the nursing programs I am applying to....so this summer and fall I am taking the last few BSN pre reqs I will need for the bridge.

Summer will be Statistics and a visual/performing arts class.

I used KHAN academy and youtube to get through alegbra

I'm taking Anatomy & Physiology 1 with a lab and Health Care Informatics this summer...15 wks!

Goodbye Summer! Good luck everyone!

Yes to the summer classes, not any math courses. I'm finishing my last 3 pre-reqs: an online biology prospective course, human development psych class, and intro to sociology. 10 credits!].
