Anyone regret ever having stepped foot in nursing school?

I did. I ended up deciding to not come back. I switched my major. I'm happy and I'm myself again. I really do feel I was one of the brave ones to realize so soon. Too much illegal and abusive behavior goes on and nothing is done about it. I remember looking through the nursing handbook and seeing how students were pretty much set up for students to fail. I remember this one instructor failing this girl because she didnt like her and not only did she fail her but she humiliated her. I still know people trying to complete a 2 year degree and they have been there for 5 years! Most students keep their mouth closed about it. Not sure why. From what I understand much of that behavior in NS is just giving you a taste of what its really like working as a nurse. Conditioning I suppose?

I regret stepping foot in my first nursing school. It was awful and I was dumb enough to not realize that it was all about how much money they can make off students and then find ways to dismiss them after being in the program until time to graduate. And I also was dumb enough to go back again to the same program. I went back the third time to another school and excelled. Always check out your schools retention rate and the Nclex pass rate. It is hard to believe that a school lets in fifty students and 20 graduate. Something is terribly wrong. Nursing school is hard but it shouldn't be that hard. Most of the students dismissed from my first program wasn't for grades. They should screen students :nurse: better before hand if they are being dismissed for things other than grades. My vent. Good luck students. Kiamichi Technology Center-Durant, Oklahoma rocks.......

I don't know that I've ever had a day where I regretted setting foot inside the school I'm attending...but I've had days like today where things feel disorganized and I'm tired and I wish I could just blow it off and sleep in tomorrow. This too shall pass!

Summersent,

I wish you all the luck in your new career. What major did you decide on? I am currently in Nursing school. I am a older person, so I am hoping this would be the right move for me. I work as a CNA for about 2 years. I want to concentrate my time on school, so I only work registry for two agenices. I want to wish you luck in your future.

I absolutely have my moments! I appreciate people like you, summersent, who are generous enough to stick around and give honest feedback for both "sides" of the spectrum. Regardless if one can relate to your post, or others, or agree...it is ALWAYS helpful to get a little taste of everything & use it to learn.

My nursing school disgusts me. That is the point I am at. They literally disgust me. Not for nitpick reasons, but for REAL solid reasons. I take my education seriously. I am an A student. I like to excel. I don't mind taking straight Bs, and KILLING myself for it, if it means I learned something. That's not how my school functions. The administration is completely jacked & the classmates are not much better. However, I can push aside classmates.

I do vent, but I feel I can stick it out for the remaining 16 months and I will be an R.N. I'm HOPING the field isn't quite as miserable as the schooling. If it is, I haven't wasted *too* much time! :) Nursing is my plan B anyway. Not because I don't like the act of nursing, but because this profession has been turned inside out. I'm quickly learning that there will be several things that prevent me for caring for my patient...the exact thing I would like to do.

I'm taking it day by day and keeping my mind open to several options. However, I would NEVER in a million years, stay somewhere that I am being abused. It's unacceptable. I will NOT fall into that category of nurses that live in denial. I just cannot be that in 30 years. That would be a SAD story. :redbeathe

Nope! I admit nursing school was one of the worst experiences of my life at the entry level. My career afterwards has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my life. But -yes- I would agree w. anyone that entry level nursing school is a beast.

Nope. I am loving it, truly. I am sorry your experiences have been bad. Mine have been so good it almost shocks me. Completely different from what I read here.

dannyc12: i couldn't agree with you more!!! love nursing school! but some of the students lovee to complain and whine  lol

Not yet. LOL But I'm still in Nursing Process I. My first day of clinicals SUCKED. I don't HATE it yet. It's the most stressful thing I have ever done and I have three kids. If I can get through nursing school, I can get through ANYTHING.

I also have a surgical tech. degree and trust me, nursing school is conditioning for the stressful work environment. I have see worse behavior in the OR. I have seen doctors scream at nurses, instruments thrown and swearing you won't hear from a truck driver. Facilities are getting better, but they tip-toe around doctors because they need them more than a nurse or a surgical tech. I learned to turn off my emotions and let things fly off my back, because honestly I don't think it will change. I'm actually thinking about finding a clinical job for less stress.

Gentlywind, I couldn't help but to notice that you are a pre-nursing student, as you were replying to my thread the other day. This would mean that you are not yet a nursing student...or has this changed? It must be nice to love your nursing program. Where do you go? It would be great to have nursing schools, with good reviews, on here.

I am proud to say I am in my first semester as a real live full fledged nursing student :) I am in Texas, one of the top three nursing schools. (edited to take the name out - feel free to PM me if you want to know) 90% retention rate, 95% NCLEX pass rate. We do have an exceptional program. It is tough but the instructors seem very dedicated to giving us tools to get through the stress and to take those steps up, and as a class, we have really pulled together and bonded.
