Anyone know how to find telecommuting nurse positions?

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I'm interested in learning about what kinds of telecommuting nurse jobs there are - and most importantly how to find these postings. I've had 5 yrs of acute physical rehabilitation nursing and am looking for new opportunities.

If anyone telecommutes I'd appreciate hearing the type of work you do, and how you made this transition.

How can you possibly telecommute as a RN unless you are one of the nurses on an Ask-A-Nurse line?

RN can be telecommuting Case Managers for insurance companies. I have a friend who works for Blue Cross and loves it. She handles Acute Rehab cases for qualifying and placement of TBI, CVA and SCI patients

The other areas with telecommuting opportunities are in Informatics and data review.

The only position I've ever seen work out in telecommuting is one where the RN had previously worked for the practice in-house. She knew the in's and out's of the practice, how the docs worked, protocols, etc. It was a dream job for her, but wouldn't exist for anyone who hadn't spent years in the position prior.

Just my experience, though. Not to say that those positions don't exist somewhere. I would look into insurance companies and their Ask-A-Nurse hotlines.

I've heard many stories about excellent telecommuting jobs for nurses. The most solid I could track down was Insurance Centers like Hartford Connecticut. My back has me looking at total disability, but I think I can do better if I find the right job. Just FYI, dispatching taxi's isn't my idea of the right job. Good luck all.

They are technically not telecommuting. There are very few true telecommuting jobs (from home on the computer). Alot of placews rewuire you to be onsite of whatever facility where the review is occuring. There are some insurances theat allow home triage calls with their specific computer program for triage 24/7. They are just far and few between but with all the changes there maybe a need for more. I found some on career bulder and monster. Also chaek "medical magement" companies......Alicare is one that comes to mind as well as BCBS.

Most medical insurance companies have case managers who often telecommute. They usually start in-house for training then head home to work. You can also check into Workers Comp companies, auto insurance companies, and other companies who require an RN to review medical records.

Actually my friend is at her home most of the time and does the work by computer or telephone.

The RNs who work in the informatics dept are also hard to catch in their office since their work on programs can be done at home. One RN who works for a software company only comes onsight to consult and then does the rest of the projects from his home.

There are also jobs that become available with the magazines and journals that will allow on to work at home.

You just have to have broader interests and think outside of the traditional box.

Even our unit meetings are now done by teleconference so more people can attend.

For inservices or clinical info from a company rep, we may also use the computer.

And of course while it is not telecommuting, the eICU is now quite popular for some hospitals if you want to still see the bedside but not be actually beside it.

Great! Keep the info coming. After 30 years of EMS and ER my back's shot. No more clinical nursing, no more on my feet for any considerable time, too close to retirement age to go back to school. Disability pay should keep me off the streets, but would much rather do some kind of work.

Actually, there are quite a few online nursing jobs. I teach online from home and it's the perfect job. Two of the best sites to find online nursing jobs is:

1) Telecommuting Jobs Part-Time Professional Jobs

2) Work From Home : Telecommuting Jobs : Home Typist : Freelance Writing : Medical Transcription Jobs : Telecommuting Employment : Legitimate Work at Home - Virtual Vocations

Make sure you type in "nursing, nurse, and medical" in the search section. Different employers use different terms. One might say "nurse jobs" and one might say "nursing jobs" So try it both ways. Good luck in your online job search! Working from home certainbly has some great advantages!
