hi malaski...i guess it must depend on the unit. i know the nicu manager told me to call occupational health. maybe you can try calling them tomorrow and see what they say. let me know if there's anything new you find out. i know they told me to call back in may.

thanks drea214! i hope you find your dream job soon! you should def look into uci (UC Irvine) if you're interested in orange county because they have like 6 nicu positions open right now, and they're for new grads (level 1 nurses).

Congrats! I'm so happy to hear that you and others are landing your dream jobs! I pray im in the same boat when i graduate! I go to the University of Texas School of Nursing in Austin, and I will be graduating in December with a BSN. I am looking to move to LA, San Diego, or SF. I have researched many hospitals, and I will be applying for about 5-6 jobs starting in August.
I really really want to work at UCLA in the PICU. My main concern is not landing my dream job, because I have little experience. My question is, how much experience did you have, and how important do you think it was in getting the job at UCLA? Any info or advice you could give me would be great! Thanks!! =)

Hi, everyone i hope you guys dont mind me sneaking in here. I have applied for a position at UCLA is non-nursing but Health Related. My status changed to "Routed to interviewing Supervisor" this status first appear on April 14th and is now April 16th and i have not received a call rewarding scheduling an interview. Does anyone know how long it will take before i get called? Do they usually call right away or do they take a couple of days after the status first appears?? I am confused am not sure if am the one that is suppose to call to schedule the interview or what. :icon_roll

Hi Christina -- I think it depends largely on the individual nurse managers and what they're looking for when they hire. When I interviewed in November, it was with the NMs of the NICU and of high-risk L&D. The NICU manager didn't ask much about my experience (I hadn't done any extracurricular externships, worked as a home health aide for one summer, and my senior synthesis clinical was on a postpartum unit); she seemed more interested in getting a sense of my personality, but then, this may be simply because the NICU is such a highly specialized unit that very little experience is transferable, unless it's actually NICU experience. The L&D manager, on the other hand, asked a number of "what would you do?" scenario-type questions, and I think she would have been happier to see that I'd done a synthesis in L&D. The PICU NM may fall into either of these categories, or may be different, so it's hard to say without my having personally met with her.

That said, I would strongly suggest that you try to cast a wider net by applying to more than just a handful of jobs. Times are really tough here right now for new grads, especially up north around San Francisco, and the more open you are to various opportunities, the better chance you have of landing something somewhere; even if it's not your dream job, you can use the experience to move on later.

So, just when I had assumed I hadn't gotten a job, I received an offer for the pediatric new grad residency program last night. I also have an offer from Vanderbilt for their new grad residency program in peds. I am thrilled to have the choice, but I am HIGHLY overwhelmed. I live in Ohio, so either would be a move for me. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts, opinions, or insight. Everything I have read basically says that both programs are great...just don't know what to do! And words of wisdom would be appreciated.

For all of you who received offers from UCLA: Did you receive an official offer letter and, if so, when? I received a verbal offer from the manager I interviewed with at Mattel Children's last week, but I haven't gotten any other details from them. I emailed the nurses recruiter and I'm not getting a lot of help from her thus far. She replies to me with short responses using acronyms that I feel only those familiar with UCLA Med Center would know...I'm getting a little turned off by this. Just hoping I will receive something more official with further details.
