Anyone Interviewed with UCLA New Grad Residency

U.S.A. California

Published

I interviewed for new grad residency program Fri feb 27th 09. I was just wondering if anyone else, whom interviewed, has had any word on being chosen or not being chosen for hire?

Specializes in NICU.

Nope, never did. I did get an informal welcome letter from Sheri, but that was only like a month after I started working. What acronyms are giving you problems?

Specializes in Pediatric ED and ICU, Family Practice.

Thanks, Coffee Nurse. Here is the information I got back from her when I emailed:

in June call the nursing resources at 3108256868 for a new hire appt for early july and ohf at 3108256771 for physical. Make sure you have your ip of you don't have board date and cpr is current. Also tb needs to be less than a year.

I'm just really unsure of what all I need to do. I am moving from Ohio and I am trying to figure out when to move. Not sure if I should just move in July when I need to be there for new hire physical, or if I should move in August. They haven't given me a start date yet, just August sometime. I'm not sure what OHF is (employee health??) or ip (something to do with NCLEX?). I have already passed my boards, so will just need to get endorsement from California Board of Nursing, I think.

I'm just a little confused. When I was offered and accepted the position I was giving any information about salary or really any details at all. I know they gave me hand-outs about benefits and such when I interviewed, so I have all that. Maybe I'm just being a little hyperactive because I'm a major planner...it just makes me al little uncomfortable to plan such a big move without something in writing!

Also, on a side note, how do you like it? I had been debating between UCLA and for awhile before deciding. Any like/dislikes you would be willing to share?

Thanks again!

(eyeroll) Sheri's nice, but her emails leave something to be desired. If I were you, I would plan on moving in July, just so you have some time to settle into the area before you start. Yes, OHF is Occupational Health (Employee Health), and she doesn't mention that you actually need to make two appointments -- an immunization review, and then the physical a week after that. They'll also do a PPD for you, if yours is out of date. The new hire appointment you need to set up is just a few hours at HR to go through all of the paperwork. IP is the California interim permit, for GNs who haven't taken their boards yet, so you don't need to worry about that.

Coffee Nurse,

Thank you so much for your response and PM. I would respond via PM, but I don't have access to that yet. It's nice to hear from someone that understands what I'm going through with this process. Would you be willing to give me your email so I could respond further? Not sure how many posts I need to have to PM, but I'm not there yet!

Hi OU nurse. I was just hired for the new grad program too. Sherri gave me all the info on pay, differentials, shift requirements, reviews, and benefits during our meeting. Let me know if you want me to PM the info, or post it on this thread.

Hi Malaski,

Sheri was not in the office the day I interviewed. If you could PM the info to me, I would really appreciate the help! Thanks!

Where will you be working?

Coffee Nurse, or anyone else who knows - Do you know if they removed they removed the 12 sick days per year from to the benefits? When Sherri was going through the benefits she wrote "86" on that part of the page. Just wondering :)

Thanks

86??

You accrue vacation and sick time every other pay period (so once every four weeks) depending on how many hours you've worked. I started mid January and so far have 23.84 hours of vacation time and 17.95 of sick time; I understand that if you're hired on at 100%, your balances in both categories go up pretty rapidly.

ok thanks! 86 is a term used when someone removes something, or is no longer included.

I realize that, but why would she write it on a piece of official paperwork? Informal at best, utterly confusing at worst.

Sorry :) Yeah, I was wondering the same thing.

my friend was hired a few months ago as a new grad in ucla's med surg to start this summer. she found out a couple days ago that ucla is having a budget crisis and people hired to start this summer won't be starting until winter. did anyone else hear this?
