I am finishing up my pre-req's and would love to see if anyone is in the same boat as I am or even in nursing school. Any advice would be much appreciated!
So if it helps I started the RN program last fall after applying to both the LPN and RN programs. I stalked (well maybe not that bad) the admissions/nursing department while waiting. LPN acceptance was sent in Mid June and RN acceptance was just after July 4th. I was declined for the LPN program. I freaked out......needless to say when I called they carefully instructed me that the RN decision had been made, but not yet mailed and that if chosen for an RN spot I would be declined for LPN. Now she reminded me I could be declined for both, but not to fall into depression just yet. I was accepted in the RN program and have completed my first year. Good luck to you all and if you aren't accepted this time around complete your co-requisites while waiting it will help you out when you do get in.
So, I changed my mind about wanting to hear more so I can stress out a little more after Sam shared her story, given that I applied to both programs and can now expect to hear back from lpn before rn. Grrr... how frustrating--even borderline cruel to do that to students. Really! What's with all these people who were accepted into both and then chose which route to go? Which year was that for? I could use the $25 from one of the apps right about now...seriously. I feel rather foolish. I wish I had spread my eggs out into a few more baskets.
Who wants to make me feel better? lol--any takers??
They dumped all the waitlists. Everyone applies each term for application those that get in move on. A few waitlist/alternatives are selected in case of no shows/early drops. If you are an alternate get all the exams, vaccines, background check because you never know. We had 2 alternates in my first semester. As far as when letters go out I too agree it is cruel and often a waist of money. When I got my LPN decline letter I freaked. If I wasn't good enough for the LPN program than I certainly wasn't going to get into the RN program, right? But I spent the whole night crying for nothing. After panic stricken calls to the school I had yet another 2 weeks of stress to wait until I heard at last. Sorry for that I am sure it doesn't help anyone relax, just try to keep a positive outlook.
Chris,
About retaking classes... I was able to retake Nutrition (which I had a B in from a couple of years ago) and Anatomy and Physiology (I got a C and D back in the day... very different student now). I just had to petition and appeal for it. I wrote a letter to the provost of the school, who is very very nice I might add, and just explained my situation. I said that I took these courses a long time ago and I wanted the chance to brush up on my skills for nursing school. He approved it and I got to retake them for A's. I would try that if you don't happen to get in this time around. That;s the only reason I had such a good GPA. Otherwise, I'd be out of luck.
What the heck is PHCC looking at for the LPN program now? Is it the overall score on the TEAS or the reading and math like what they use to use for the NET? I don't think PHCC has anymore students on the wait list. As for as the LPN when I was accepted as an alternate for the Jan 2010 program back in 2007 they told me that was one of the last semesters they were using wait list for the LPN. I do believe the RN stopped taking waitlist a semester or 2 before the LPN.

USF's 2nd Bach is ridiculously competitive. I was going to apply for this fall, but last fall, my hubby and I separated, so I am now a single mom of 3. I think that program would put me into an early grave. It is VERY intense. I am a USF grad with my bachelor's in Social Work/Sociology :) I have a 3.7 overall (the 4.0 is for PHCC's pre-req's) , and I was informed that I would be a "competitive" candidate, but...again, no guarantees. I felt more unsettled at USF than at PHCC. Those kids over there are intense (took Chem last fall...70% of the students were in tears after the final. I was just relieved it was over! I was thrilled to have pulled off a B, but was told by the advisor, I really needed an A...).
More sharing of background stories! I love them :)
I think this "getting to know you" stuff courtesy of allnurses is very cool!
