Anyone in Florida doing Excelsior College?

Nursing Students Excelsior

Anyone in Fl doing excelsior college? I am afraid I will have spend all that money and not be able to get my nursing license.

my friend knows an lpn at her job that is doing excelsior college now, doing lpn-rn

she likes it because of the convenience, and she can practice the skills for testing at her job.

once i read somewhere- correct me if i am wrong- that florida was not going to take excelsior grads anymore- they had to come back with 2 years rn experience to work in florida--- i'm not sure if they fixed that already or not.

i saw that info once in myflorida.com, but it has been taken down.

these are the colleges of nursing recognized by the state of florida, according to my florida.com

but- also, look what i found on the excelsior website:

florida pobtrans.gifdirect licensure: graduates who were lpn’s at the time of admission and had integrated theory and clinical in their lpn program are eligible for licensure by examination.

endorsement: graduates who were not lpns at the time of admission may endorse in after completing two years of active practice as a registered nurse in another state or in a federal facility in florida.

Thanks, I am going to call the Florida board of nursing.

Okay... so basically the issue is that there was some change in the law regarding out of state schools. This was made in July... however... everyone since that has applied for licensure to florida by examination has been approved (including people in the last month or so... and one is someone i know personally). The florida board of nursing is saying they are reviewing the apps on a case by case basis... however like i said, they have still approved them all. Whether this will change in the future or not, I don't know. Excelsior is saying the problem doesn't have to do with lack of clinicals, just the whole out of state thing... and that this is not florida trying to prevent excelsior grads from getting a license. Excelsior is saying that this issue should be resolved in the near future and that florida students should be able to get licensed by exam without having to be reviewed on case by case basis or whatever.

So... since I am graduating this month... excelsior told me I have 2 options... I could apply to florida and be reviewed on case by case basis which could potentially take a little longer or I could end up being rejected. Or I could get my license in another state and then apply for my florida license by endorsement. So I chose to do that. I am applying to NC (that's what excelsior recommended) and I am going to be taking NCLEX in florida (or you can take anywhere else in the US) and results are sent to NC. After I pass and get my license... I do not have to work in NC or anything... I can just apply directly to florida for licensure by endorsement. So basically this process may be taking me an extra month or so... and an extra $70 by having the get a NC license first, but it's really no big deal. Again, I can't guarantee that things will not change in the future... but as of now, you can still get your license (just have to go thru a few hurdles) and it seems that florida and excelsior is resolving the issue so it won't be a problem in the future.

Sorry so long... let me know if you have any questions. By the way... what point are you at in the program? Are you close to graduating?

Thanks, that was very helpful. I've only taken 1 exam so far, but I am going to try to finish the rest by May. i want to be able to register for the FCCA by June. Were in Florida are you? I am in Naples.

Yes that is very doable... I started the program in may of 09 and took my cpne in october... the only reason i'm just now graduating is i put off taking microbiology for several months (was slackin'). I'm in Tampa.

Hi there, I am a Florida resident. I have just my CPNE left I take next month. Basically, once you graduate you apply to another state then you endorse into Florida.

I just talked to the State board Advising from Excelsior. As of this time, I will apply for Minn. license then endorse into Florida.

I have not had any other problems.

Note: of course it is extra money; but I am not willing to relocate and will gladly pay the additional 105 for Minn fee for licensure!!!

Wow, thats pretty quick. I am an LPN and live in FLorida. I want to take the Excelsior course but am a little hesitant because I want to do it quickly. But I see that some of you are finishing pretty fast. I have all my pre-reqs done just need the Nursing aspect of it done. I would love to buddy up with someone just in case I go through this and need some advice.

I'm doing the program. (I'm also in Tampa) I haven't officially enrolled, but I am scheduled to take the first exam on Monday. I will schedule the second for early May. I am planning on having all of my exams completed by the end of this year at the latest. My friend has also recently started the program and we are studying and doing this together. If the law stays the same, we plan on getting licensed in NC as Excelsior recommends and then endorsing into Florida. From my understanding, as long as you were an LPN beforehand, you do not need to work outside of FL at all to apply for endorsement.

I am a nursing graduate of Fl. It has changed my life. For the past year and a half I have been working on a med surg unit. I am currently working on a tele/ stroke unit. There is so much room for advancement when you get your RN. Continue with your studies and it will pay off. I am making 28 an hr now. I was making 20 when I was an LPN. I am also going to be trained in progressive care.

I hope the best for all of you nursing students of Excelsior. It will pay off.

Lisa, I just got my MN license and I'm in the process of transferring it to FL. Just FYI - if you are not going to move in a future, you might think about NC license - it's only about $70 :) (I decided to have MN license just because my husband and I are thinking about going back to MN in a couple of years)

Hmmm... I wish I would have done the MN license. Excelsior told me that with NC, I could submit a transcript before my grad date, and so i paid to do so, but that wasn't true. Now I have to wait til the 19th of this month to submit my transcript coz it has to be one that is "final." I see on MN site that they will take an official transcript before the degree conferral date as long as you have completed all requirements. And it appears they do not require fingerprinting like I had to do for NC (which cost me $38). MN might have been quicker, but oh well. I should have done my research first. Trying to be patient here ;) Just ready to start working as an RN (that's if I can even get a job lol). Anyway, congrats to those of you that are graduating as well... or close to graduating.
