Neonatal nursing: a physiologic perspective.... Not great for hands on, but great for understanding what's going on.

I really love the Merenstein/Gardner Handbook. It's my savior. :D Though, admittedly, it's the only one of two that I have (the other one is a book for MD's, the Neonatology book by Gamella- it's also very good, pocket-sized, a bit more concise and MD related, but it really has helped me to understand the tx protocols that our doctors use on the unit).

Quick reference book is ' Handbook of neonatal intensive care,' Halliday,McClure, and Reid. But you can't beat Merenstein/Gardner

Merenstien and Gardner, again! Neofax for drugs. They have a website--just check google.

I don't know, Sandi, I'm not a big fan of the Neofax. I know it's small enough to fit in a pocket, but I don't know what I'd do without my Neonatal Medications and Nutrition (by Zenk, et al)book- the big black one that was being sold through ANN?

It's not pocket sized, but it has EVERYTHING in it and is just a fantastic and thorough drug resource. Everyone I work with uses the Neofax, but I stick by my choice. I'm a black sheep, I guess. :D

I also have a great fondness for Handbook of Neonatal Care by Merenstein & Gardner.

When I was studying for my RNC exam I soaked up everything in Core Curriculum for Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing by Deacon; and Manual of Neonatal Care by Cloherty & Stark. I passed on my first attempt but expect I had also learned alot in the past from Comprehensive Neonatal Nursing by Kenner, et. al. and Physical Assessment of the Newborn: A Comprehensive Guide to the Art of Physical Examination by Tappero & Honeyfield.

For medication administration, I "cut my teeth" on Neofax which is a great pocket-size drug book with the most pertinent information. I often would add my own personal notes to it. It's published each year. I absolutely love Neonatal Medications and Nutrition: A Comprehensive Guide, 3rd Ed. by Zenk, et. al. I loved the 2nd edition and recently received the new 3rd edition.

Two of my new favorites are authored by Richard Polin and they are Fetal and Nneonatal Secrets and Workbook in Practical Neonatology. They are more geared to the neonatologist, but I found them incredibly insightful for my understanding of how and why things are done in the NICU setting.

By the way, the books by Zenk; Tappero & Honeyfield; and Merenstein & Gardner can all be purchased through NICU Ink publishers which is part of Neonatal Network at a bit of a discount. http://neonatalnetwork.com/nicuink/index.htm

If you want to start with just a couple of books, I'd suggest the Merenstein & Gardner and the Zenk books to start with, followed closely with Deacons book. The Neofax is never to be counted out if you want a good drug book to keep in your pocket.

Good luck in your endeavors!

I just got the Zenk book free for joining ANN, so I took it in to work. Where I used to work, neofax was favored. And, Neofax has a palmpilot expansion card, I think.

Okay, have I mentioned how much I love this board?!!!! I recently got Handbook of Neonatal Care by Merenstein & Gardner. Our unit supplies Neofax to all the staff, sothat's one I have already. I also have the "Secrets" book as one of the authors is our attending. Still haven't had a chance to read that one though. Thanks again everyone!!!!1
