Anyone else struggling with biol 189?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I just had my first test in biology 189 today and I'm positive I did awful. I have read the chapters, I have gone over my notes, I even took the review sheet the teacher provided a week before the test and went over every question and wrote down what I thought the answer was and then went over it in the book to double check. I thought I was prepared and when I sat down for the test today everything that was on the test wasn't on the review sheet so I spent more time focusing on stuff I was told to study then other things.

My question is, did anyone else do horrible their first test? What did you do to overcome it and do better on the next test? I dedicate a good hour every night to this class. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

What class is Biol 189? All schools use different codes I think.

This is from my syllabus on the course description:

Fundamentals of life science. Biology 189 is a survey of contemporary biology with topics including biochemistry, cell structure and function, genetics, physiology, evolution, and ecology. It is intended for Biological Sciences and Health Sciences majors and other students who require general biology knowledge as part of their professional career preparation.

Through which college or university are you taking Biol 189?

Maybe you should wait to see what your test results are. I JUST finished taking a test in a nutrition class and was almost for certain I failed and prayed with each test question.LOL!!! Then when I got the test results back, I actually did WWAAAAYYYYYY better than I thought. I say just wait and see what your results were and also since you know how you're being tested after taking the first test, apply what you learned from the first test experience to the next test. My teachers even gave my class samples of how their tests were and one was easy but as soon as we took the actual test it was hard as you know what. LOL! Now I know what to expect with that class. Good luck and I hope you did well on your test. If you didnt do well, there are also other tests that you can take or maybe other assignments to help boost your grade? :)

If you didn't do well it is probaby because you don't know how to apply the bio

concepts. It is not enough to just study the concepts and memorize it in the fashion that it is

described in the textbook. You actually have to know how to use it in a setting

that is not linear and straightforward. When I took the required biology course for my university last semester

I forced myself to think of the concepts in a different way and would quiz myself on the definition followed

by a real-world example of how that definition or biology concept can be applied to explain a certain

biological process or understand a phenomena.

In the real world, it is not enough to know something but to take it and apply it

to the real-world is what is important. Also, if you can afford I would highly suggest

you make an account for

masteringbiology.com

That site came with a code in my textbook and it helped me a lot with understanding certain concepts such as the Calvin cycles, photosynthesis, and cellular respiration. It has animations, quizzes, and study guides to help you master the concepts. It even has audio clips for you to download and listen for the audio learners or on-the-go. I downloaded some audio clips to listen to on my 25-minute commute to school everyday and it helped me tremendously on reinforcing and understanding the difficult biological processes in cellular respiration.

I just checked webcampus and the grades were posted the class average was a 44.9/75 which is a 59%. I got a 43. That's better then I thought I would of done. I thought I was going to get a 30%.

Thanks for the masteringbiology.com I'm going to look into it.

Just besure to review the full chapter.

Im taking bio right now too. I just took an exam on cell processes and I thought I totally failed it...93%!!!

I focus on what I am having a hard time grasping and leave the rest for quick review.

Making notes and flashcards seem to help me.
