If anyone care to share what made you choose Nursing as a career... What are the things in Nursing you like most?

Thread was started out of curiosity and networking purposes only.

Thank you all.

Definitely the fact that it is rewarding, there is just something so...humbling...to be able to be a nurse, not to also mention the fact that it's a job where you can only go up...if you want to go up. I love the aspect how more education can take you to different levels of nursing.

Hahahahaha this thread is hilarious. I didn't "fall in love" with nursing. It provides me a roof, food in my tummy, and health-care.

Real world nursing vs the fantasy flowery world of nursing school dont even compare.

I think many of us know that. Nursing is a job just like any other. You are going to have miserable people at any job and I'm not talking about patients. My clinical instructor told our group on our last day how positive we were as a group and to never change that. To always have a good attitude even when you have rough days.

I irks me when people talk about nursing students and try to spread their negativity about their jobs. I'm sorry some people have chosen the wrong career but I know I have not. For me, going back to college and getting my degree is extremely important. I'm going to go back to work in a job I will love. And clinical this semester showed me that I did indeed choose the right career path. Taking care of people when they are at their most vulnerable is appealing to me. I want to help them recover. I want to be a part of the process.

Good luck OP. It's going to be a crazy ride, but for me, I love it.

Bravo! Hope some of us will be inspired. Thank you.

Wish you all the best.

3 12s and 4 days off a week. I'm still not in love, but it's what got me interested in being a nurse in the first place.

This thread should be called "How I fell in love with the idea of nursing," if only because the question is posed to people who haven't actually entered the field yet. It's like asking people "how did you fall in love with a food you haven't tasted yet?"

Truth be told, I'm not in love with nursing. There are aspects of it I like (science, multi-tasking, getting to school Moms who wedMD everything, seeing sick kids pull through) and aspects of it I hate (it's disturbingly similar to my old waitressing job in both function and work environment, the hours still stuck, seeing sick kids not pull through). But I'm good at it, and it's never, ever boring.

I enjoy helping people and also the organizational aspect of it. It's one of the few ways I like to be organized. My house is sometimes very disorganized. LOL

What I don't expect to like about it: Mandatory overtime, 12hr 3 days, and tired body.

What I expect I will love about it: I really can't say it better than the reply about watching a NICU nurse sing her dying patient to sleep, and the grandmother of an OD crying in her arms, but also the medicine aspect, infection control (I am so interested in nurse epidemiology), and a tired body from doing the best I can give.

When I saw that I look totally awesome in scrubs!!!!

Ok, I was kidding, no one looks awesome in scrubs! I went into nursing because I had a fascination with medicine, wanted the flexibility of a career where I could do just about anything and earn a living doing something more interesting than sitting behind a desk. I fell in love with it when I realized that I made a real difference in peoples lives. I go to work every day knowing that someone is going to feel better because of me. I love being able to help!

Thank you all.

My long ride with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and a pituitary adenoma inspired me to take care of people. I have my nurses to thank for keeping my spirit alive during those rough two years of absolute misery and brain fog. I was in a criminal justice program- as you can see, I changed my path! After learning about what my body was doing, I had to become a nurse. I love health sciences, but mostly, I love to take care of other people.

Best of luck to you in your endeavors.
