The deadline is the last Friday in March. From now on I going to open my options because I am now aware competition is pretty fierce for jobs; for some reason I just assumed a job was going to just appear and float down in my hand like a feather, how naive. BTW I graduate this upcoming May. I am starting to get pretty freaked out about jobs now. And, have you all heard anything about Scott & White? Seton was my first choice, but I'm just making more room.
Yes, I work at S&W in the Cardiothoracic Surgery ICU and I absolutely love it. I started in the June 2012 internship. I moved 1700 miles to here, specifically for this position and I haven't regretted it yet. As a new grad nurse, it was important for me to find a place where they didn't eat their young and supported me and I found that here and more. It is rough starting in the ICU as a new grad and I have never felt as much stress in my life at times but have i ever regretted coming here? No way. I love my coworkers and the teamwork. I loved my preceptors (who are now my coworkers) and I am ever grateful to them for guiding me to where I am now. I learned more in the internship than I did in all of nursing school. And I owe it to this internship and Scott and White.
Hello everyone! I have a phone interview next week for acute care/med-surg. Does anyone have any advice for a phone interview? Also, for those already employed at Scott & White, can you tell me more about the med-surg floor? I saw that the nurse to patient ratio can be 1:6, which concerns me.
I am from CA as well and I have seen up to 1:5 which for us seemed crazy. I am thinking that S&W must have a lot of ancillary help in order to go up to 6 or even 8 patients per nurse. Good Luck Nursey86! When is your interview? I have my phone interview next Thursday. :)
Ya, they must have extra help. My phone interview is next Thursday at 2. Best of luck to you! :)
Jut to clarify, I never said S&W had 1:8 patients on the floor, or even 1:6. I just stated that I know places (in NJ where I am from) that have 1:8 ratios.
I have heard of a ration of 1:8, and I am sure that it can be done. I just feel that is it pushing it on the side of safety for me. I had seen a previous post on this thread, I believe, that said that S&W med-surg floors have a high turnover d/t the patient ratio of 1:6, which could or could not be true. That had me a bit concerned. I do appreciate your feedback though, it was very helpful to hear from a S&W nurse.
That is so exciting to hear! I know that since the market is so tight, I can't exactly be picky about my unit. However, I would LOVE to be in ICU...but even more so, I hope to have the same--a positive team setting where they embrace their young, not scare them away.
Okay, so you made it through and landed a position with Scott & White. Looking back, do you have any advice for people applying? Are there certain assets that you may have noticed that they are looking for?
Oh, and being that I am not originally from Texas either, how has the adjustment been? My family has already moved there this past July and they are just waiting for me to graduate to be reunited. However, I have not had the chance to really get a feel for it myself yet.

Thank you, Lovelymo79. I gave that a try, but it didn't seem to work for me. I do check daily though. Checking job posting updates has become part of my routine, lol. I was nosy and took a look at your profile. Is it correct to assume you are in the ICU at Scott & White? If so, how do you like it there? What is the team environment like? So many questions...but will start with these if you have time to answer.
