I am in it right now and I'm ready to lose my mind. There is so much information. I never knew a brain could hurt but mine does! I think my instructors may be trying to kill me Just had to vent - studying for my next test which includes GI, endocrine, musculoskeletal and hematology...
I just finished advanced patho last week and thank God the professor offered a blueprint of her tests prior to each one. Got an "A". I always feel like I dont have the brain capacity to try to absorb all of that information to be competent enough to look at my patient and diagnose him/her on the spot. I'm still like...wait...where's that body part located? LOL! Honesty. It's good to vent though...so let it flooooww.
I'm attending Simmons Online and Advanced Patho is part of 1st term...sigh...it's ALOT of reading and comprehending. I spend the bulk of my time on it, however, I love my live sessions with my classmates and instructor as we use the info learned in the text to complete case studies for class and it's helpful to critically think through the diseases down to the pathological beginnings! I'm totally thankful I'm not currently taking Pharm with Patho though...that would be a double punishment!
I'm hoping to start at Simmons in the fall, I was really hesitant about pursuing my FNP "online", but I feel Simmons is more a distance learning than online due to the live classes. I really think this will help get the most out of the 3 Ps.
My Professor called Advanced Patho, "the weeding out course". If you survive Patho, you will survive the course. Am glad that's behind me. Now off to Pharmacology. My advice is, if you have time, read the textbook with the objectives at hand so that you don't have to read stuff that is not included in the objectives.
Most difficult course in the whole program! Some people love that stuff, I am not one of them! Thankfully my instructor also offered a study guide for tests. Otherwise I would have flunked. Also my school only required a C to pass non-nursing classes and I barely scraped out a C! As long as your GPA was 3.0 you were good. Good luck to everyone taking this horrible class. So glad school is behind me!
I agree, Advanced Pathophys is a weed out course! I never studied so hard in my life. But it was worth it. Our info was from book and class power points. I reread the info, and transferred it all onto index cards, which I studied from. Towards the end of the semester, I started to tape lecture, and listen while driving. We had 4 exams, with an optional 5th to bring up your grade-- which was comprehensive!
I made it out in 4 tests, with an A. The passing grade at our school was an 83.
And it's true, what a previous poster said, you do not retain it all. I spoke with an MD at work who told me that was normal, it just gave you a better understanding of topics you hear discussed.

How are the tests in adv patho? Do you have to write papers too?
