Any UCSF Mepn Applicants?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi everyone--

Has anyone else out there applied to the UCSF MEPN program? They're supposed to send out letters this month (December) for the interview process. Has anyone gotten a letter yet? Will those that aren't asked to the interview process get a rejection letter now?

Crossing my fingers...!

thanks for the input star. i just confirmed my intention to accept admission into the program so i'll be seeing you in june. btw i talked with the person who was the #1 alternate for our specialty (don't know if you remember her but she was sitting next to me in the lecture hall after lunch.) and she's headed to yale this year. so good news for whoever's #2, you just moved up a spot! :D

Cool! I'm glad you're going. I think it's good to ask questions about programs - and it certainly is a valid question that you have- I just think that the NPs from UCSF seem to do pretty well, so I can't imagine that clinical hours are wasted or lacking. Besides, a difference of 200 hours is about a month of work, which in the long run doesn't make a big difference. Whatever amount of time I'm given, I'm making the most of it, that's for damn sure, and I'm also certain it'll feel like too much by the end of a shift!

Now to the question: "Who will be my Number 2?" (said in best Dr Evil voice...)

Is anyone else going absolutely INSANE with the housing search?

I just found a place across the st from UCSF, but damn it's pricey!!!

The best "deal" will be found in university housing. I dunno what it looks like but I know it is cheap for SF.

Yeah, I was checking that out. It's 99% full though, from what I remember, so I've been using craigslist. My boyfriend is a native San Franciscan, so he just laughs at my reactions to prices.

i feel your pain. i too am #1 on alternate list for my specialty. anyone know the liklihood of getting off waitlist? when i went for my interview, it seemed like ucsf was everyone's #1 choice. -_-0

I know of someone who got into UCSF off of the waitlist, she found out like 2 weeks before classes started too!

I'm not sure how it works at UCSF. A lot of schools have an admissions percentage, they admit X number of people with a goal of having Y people matriculate and assume a certain percentage of people won't accept. Is UCSF the same way? or do you think that they've only admitted X students in a certain specialty with the goal of having X students enroll and if one person turns them down, the #1 alternate is called up? Any ideas?

I think it really depends and varies. I'm #2 for my specialty and after reading these posts I still have an ounce of hope that I might get in---when I first got the letter I had none. I'm really not sure how many spots there were but for the ACHIN, I'm assuming not many. I'm hoping some of those folks decide to go to Yale too!

Hi All,

Just wanted to congratulate everyone who got in and on the waitlist. You'll get it for sure!

I've been lurking on this post for a while reading about everyone's experience and hope to learn from it when I apply next year. Again, congratulations to all of you!!

Re: housing... SF is a small big city (just 7x7 miles!) so no area is really too far from UCSF (though public transportation & traffic issues may differ).

Nice neighborhoods near campus: UCSF Parnassus area, Cole Valley, and Inner Sunset are the closest; Upper Haight, Twin Peaks, Diamond Heights, USF/Laurel Heights are also fairly close. Living by the Mission Bay campus/Potrero Hill would work too as it's a ~20-25 min. UCSF shuttle ride from the nursing school. This is a decent guide to neighborhoods: http://www.sfgate.com/traveler/guide/sf/neighborhoods/

Housing is very pricey indeed, with parking often extra. I share a 1-bedroom with parking & backyard near UCSF with my boyfriend for $1900, and we consider ourselves lucky. In Cole Valley a few years ago, I paid $115/month to park in a lot. The alternative is neighborhood street parking permits, which are $60/year, and expect some $40 tickets for forgetting when street cleaning is.

If anyone has questions about housing issues, I've rented in SF for 11 years, so feel free to email me.

My understanding is that this is how it works.

The admission process there seems rather Byzantine so my understanding could very well be dead wrong.

because i was a little too excited for this coming june, i decided to backtrack through all of the posts pertaining to this year's applicants and upon doing a little (some might say neurotic and stalkerish lol) research, i have calculated the number of people on this board who have been accepted into the ACNP specialty.

there are 5 of us so far (which is about the same number as the previous year i believe) and based on everyone's reaction to being accepted, i'm assuming we're all seeing each other in june :

anyone else lurking around the boards and wanna reveal yourself to your future classmates?? anyways, to my 4 other awesome ACNPers, here's a hearty CONGRATS on my part! I look forward to meeting you guys, as well as the rest of the MEPN class in June!:D

Holy crap shortcake, good research! Hey everyone, should we meet up for beer/coffee/high-fives/handshakes/martinis/general rabble rousing at some point?

We might as well start getting to know each other sooner than later.

to those of you that are looking for housing:

Don't rule out the east bay. I have a lot of friends that are in and have went through the mepn program at ucsf and live in the east bay and say that they love it. the commute isn't bad and think of it as study time and a lot of the time is spent driving to clinicals anyway. and parking is much easier. i have lived in both san francisco and oakland for the past 12 years and oakland rocks!! we have beautiful trees and trails, great food, (not too much in way of night life, but then again that will probably be a mute issue in the first year) and lots o great peeps!! i know that most of you who are moving to they bay from afar will probably want to live in the city but consider oakland if rent and parking is an issue or if you prefer a quieter enviro. and in my opinion the east bay is more diverse than san francisco especially as san francisco continues to ascend in terms of cost of living.
