Any UCSF Mepn Applicants?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Hi everyone--

Has anyone else out there applied to the UCSF MEPN program? They're supposed to send out letters this month (December) for the interview process. Has anyone gotten a letter yet? Will those that aren't asked to the interview process get a rejection letter now?

Crossing my fingers...!

No denial/no interview....yet.

Hi!

I'm currently in the first year of the MEPN program. If they aren't going to grant you an interview, you will receive a yukky rejection letter. Otherwize, you will interview either the third or fourth Friday in January. The letters usually get to applicants right around this time, definitely before Xmas.

I remember VERY clearly how horribly stressful this waiting period was. Hang in there! If you have any specific questions,

Emily

Thanks Emily!

I'm studying right now for my final for my last prereq--Physiology. I know that the letters are due any day now. Yep, it's pretty stressful. I keep rethinking my essay and realize that I didn't present myself in the way that I wanted to. So I'm really hoping I get the interview to show them how focused I am. Thanks for being on this forum to help us wannabes. How are you liking it? I'll email you when I get my letter...

Hi,

I know it is early, I am planning on applying to UCSF next year and I had a couple of questions: I read on a different thread that UCSF won't even look at you if you do not have direct patient experience. I come from a completly different background.

And do you mind sharing your GRE scores or ball park number?

Thanks

Hi Om, it's never too early. The application process takes a long time, and getting the right experience is crucial. I don't think I have enough. My scores (verbal 690, quantitavie 780)and gpa (3.4 undergrad, 3.8 grad) are great though, so I'm hoping that'll carry me through.

Hi Pedroparramo--Did you apply anywhere else?

Actually, you do not necesarily need ANY patient care experience for the MEPN program. UCSF wants to recruit and accept a diverse class of people from all different backgrounds. The most important thing is to tell them why you want to be an advanced practice nurse, what you plan to do with the degree, and show them what steps you have taken to be sure you know it's the right career for you. For instance, have you volunteered in a hospital/clinic? Have you been involved with advanced practice nurses in any way? How have you learned about field of nursing?

It does vary by specialty as well. Most of the midwifery students came in with some direct experience with childbearing families such as working as a doula, in a reproductive clinic, etc. However, many of the other specialties have students with little or no direct healthcare experience. When I applied, I had volunteered both at UCSF hospital and CPMC but was working in business.

GRE scores and GPA are definitely important, but probably less so than life experience, employment history, leadership experience, volunteer work, and foerign language proficiency. Also, some masters specialties are significantly more competitive than others.

Best of luck to you all!

Emily

Nada.... no letter yet as of today 12/16. Anyone heard yet?

Hi Tia--

Nope. I haven't heard anything yet either. It's sure getting down to the wire...Let's keep in communication!

I am waiting for a letter from UCSF as well. I applied for the Psychiatric specialty, which is less popular compared to midwifery, etc. Anyone else apply for something similar? Or in MEPN Psychiatric track?

Hi JT!

I applied to the ANP Integrated & Complementary Healing track. Good luck!

I got mine today 12/16. I was thick - had maps and directions on how to get to the interview sites. I guess the thin ones would be the rejections.

Good luck, everyone.
