Nurses Headlines

Published

Five nurses at a Denver hospital were suspended for three weeks when they opened a body bag and commented on a dead man's genitals: Denver Health nurses suspended after opening body bag to see man's genitals.

The incidents occurred at Denver Health Medical Center between March 31 and April 3, 2017 and were reported May 8, the Denver Channel reported. According to hospital spokesman Josh Rasmussen, the nurses opened a body bag and made admiring comments about the man's genitals. The comments were heard by a sixth nurse, who believed they were inappropriate and reported it to hospital staff.

A police report confirmed the account: Multiple staff members viewed the victim while he was incapacitated, including after he was deceased.”

Four of the nurses have since returned to work at the hospital, and the fifth is no longer is employed by the hospital, but wasn't terminated,” the Denver Channel reported.

Police said there wasn't enough evidence that a crime had taken place to file charges. The incident will, however, go on the nurses' permanent records at the hospital.

They should be reprimanded and made to TEACH sensitivity classes to all of the staff member. Why?? If they are gawking at body parts before and after a person has expired... there is no place for medical professionals in clinical decision making- direct patient care positions who have not learned how to handle their mental health issues in such a way as to not interfere with your work environment. People who have addressed their mental health or already have good emotional health are aware of their feeling/thoughts will most certainly say no...for this is not a good ideal. This to me clearly is mob mentality and it appears, peers banded together and influenced each other. These employees lost their sense of identity (think nurse) and played into the excitement behavior, much like a bachelorette/bachelor party. We all make mistakes, we all act "off" at times. Truly learning from this however will hopefully ensure a scenario like this will never happen again.

Be made to teach sensitivity classes? 'Truly learning from this' should mean losing their jobs. That'll teach them a lesson they won't forget.

I specifically remember the same thing happening at a trauma center where I worked. The patient was dead and lying in the trauma room for transport to the morgue. He had died from a sudden and total catastrophic crush injury (why they even transported him is beyond me). He had sub cutaneous air from his shoulders to his knees and his scrotum was inflated to the size of a smaller basket ball. We zipped and unzipped that body bag a couple of times to view the devastation of an injury like that. There was nothing salacious about it at all. No different than a cadaver lab.

If they really were opening the bag to admire his deceased member, I'd say it was very salacious. And one *consents* to become a cadaver for educational purposes.

I hear Rasputin's member was preserved in formaldehyde.

Apparently these gals were very curious. Honestly, I'm a bit curious myself at this point. It's never been a preoccupation of mine but, this is a news story, and in the interest of the furthering my knowledge base, I would like to know more specifics regarding this case.
