Any nuse from North Carolina I need your advice?????

Does any one know if North Carolina has reciprosity? Can I exchange a NY RN license for a NC license and if so how long does it take

I may eventually want to move there from NY to NC in the next couple of years.

How is the job market there and what areas is best to seek employment?

All states have reciprocity. Each state may have different hoops for you to jump through, but the end result will be the same. Some states that are compact states will recognize a license from another compact state, but as long as you jump through the hoops you will get a Carolina license.

I just applied for (and received) a NC license--it took less than a month. I myself am planning to move to Charlotte at the end of February 2008. During the process, I found that AZ, AR, CO, DE, ID, IO, KY, ME, MD, MS, NC, NE, NH, NM, ND, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, and WI, are all in a licensing compact with one another. I just applied for (and received) a NC license--it took less than a month. I myself am planning to move to Charlotte at the end of February 2008. Licenses do not have reciprocity, only the NCLEX exam has it. This means that you must apply for License by Endorsement and meet the requirements of the new state.

You will not be exhanging a license, but getting a new one in the new state. Your license that you hold now will remain active until its expiration date if you do not renew it; and then will become inactive if not renewed. But it is never traded in for a new one in a new state.

And to add to this:

The Compact License is only valid if you reside in a state that has that, if you move from there then the compact part of the license becomes null and void, but the license in that one state will still remain active.

If you are currently in NY and plan to move, wait until you have a new address if you are wishing to get a compact license. Otherwise that license will only be valid for the one state.

correct. nclex is usually taken only once to obtain initial licensure.

(for inactive nurses, some states permit taking nclex again to obtain active license).

endorsement is the process of transfering nursing license to another state. each state board of nursing has it's own regulations regarding qualifications one must meet for licensure. nurses who are actively working with current license often meet other states regulations.

kendel. . .you simply need to go to the website of the north carolina board of nursing to find out the procedure for endorsement of your nursing license to their state. they will have the steps and procedure to do this listed right there, most likely along with the application form you will have to fill out. you can get a link to the their board website from allnurses by clicking on the "links" tab at the top right of any allnurses page you are on. a drop down menu appears. click on "boards of nursing". when the page with the listing of the boards of nursing comes up, click on north carolina and you will get the link to their board of nursing. just click it and you will be there. look for a link about "endorsement". that is the technical term for reciprocity.

you should also be able to get a listing of all the medical facilities in the state on the website of their state (public) health department. as far as the work situation, i would go to a job newsletter such as nursing spectrum (http://www.nurse.com/) which prints nursing job news by u.s. sections of the country and see what facilities are advertising for that area of the country. let me warn you, however, as someone who has moved across the country a couple of times. . .these hospitals that advertise in the nursing journals and job papers like nursing spectrum usually are hurting for nurses for some reason or another. you can usually expect to get hired on pretty quickly if you have a good work record and references and a clean license, but you will be working hard for the money you will be making. there is usually a reason of some sort that they have a problem needing nurses and have to advertise nationally.

i am in the new york area and i want to move because the house prices are just too much here. i cant afford it. they want 550,000 for a house in ny.

Please be aware that, in most states, the prevailing wages for nurses reflect the overall cost of living. Just because housing is cheaper in another state doesn't mean you'll necessarily be better off -- you'll probably be making lower wages than you make in NY, also.

Also, if you are accustomed to having a union contract in your job(s) in NY, you can forget that in NC -- no such thing! :)
