Any nurses out there still wearing a cap?

Hello. I saw a nurse the other day in the parking lot wearing the traditional white nurse cap. I ran over to her and asked why on earth she was wearing that. It turns out she is from the "Old School" era of nurses (1970's) and has never worked a nursing job without her cap ...as she put it "I worked for this cap and nobody but myself will remove it". So, here is the question : Have you ever, or are you currently working with a nurse who wears the cap? ANy insights would be appreciated

they are silly looking

And especially so on a dude. :D

they are silly looking

Male nurses never have been required to wear any type of nursing caps.

Nursing caps are not silly. They are a sense of emense pride to those who wear them and if you talk to any older nurses that still wear them, most of us could not survive a nursing program like they went through.

If you think so, then sit down and chat with one of them one day and let them tell you what they did in nursing school.

You'll quickly realize that the programs that we have now, are a cakewalk compared to what they had to do to earn that cap and they deserve every ounce of respect and should not be make fun of.

I think it's neat that some old school nurses still wear their caps.. I like what the poster above me said..

I know the cap is deeply rooted with tradition... But I also sometimes feel that maybe we need our traditions to progress just as nursing has.

Toss up for me.

I've seen one nurse wear her white cap. She was younger too, only in her early 40's. She wouldn't wear all white though, she'd wear regular colored/printed scrubs with her cap.

I have two caps, one from LVN school and one from RN school, we didn't wear them in clinic, just for graduation. They are both in clear plastic boxes displayed in my sewing room.

NO - NO

they were germ-laden things

when i first went into nursing we were required but when they hired a lot of male nurses we c/o discrimination that we were required to wear hats and they weren't and that ended thar

men are priceless

Saying the caps look silly is not making fun of older nurses.

I quit wearing my hat a long time ago. I love my hat (we had a nice one) but I don't have much hair to clip it to and it always came off my head when I would bump into curtains etc.

That nurse you described is a show off maybe a few chemical issues :lol_hitti I'm a "old school 70s" nurse and we were taught that caps were NOT to be worn in public, only on the job.

Thanks for letting give my 2 cents,

i used to work with an older LPN who alway wore all white dress, white hose and her cap to work everyday. she was very proud of it and was admired by many.

my cap is huge. it looks like a sand bucket and i would never wear it to work, but i am so proud of it and keep it on display.

I STILL wear a nursing cap, as well as a white DRESS uniform and a white lab coat, stockings and shoes. I managed to locate some new nursing caps this past week on ebay. One arrived today by FEDEX. The others are on their way. I will NOT wear "scrubs" . I am a professional and will dress as one (properly attired, no extra jewelry or long fingernails or sloppy "hairstyles"). I will continue to dress this way until I retire from nursing, which is a LONG way off.

That's okay! Try Kay's caps online. They have just about every nursing cap known to man.

Caps are discouraged but not prohibited at the hospital where I work, and there are several nurses who do wear them.

Interestingly, all of them except one are younger than me. The older nurse works on peds and always wears a white dress as well.
