Any Legal Nurse Consultants who did not take any courses?

I know that the courses are probably great but are there any LNC's who are working but have not taken the courses? I have done a great deal of reading by nurses who are LNC's who have written books on starting this type of business. Just interested in seeing how those without the courses may be fairing.

I too am questioning at the moment the VM course I feel it was worthwhile but too expensive and havent used the mentoring part. By sheer luck the only attorney who is interested in me at the moment is connected to me personnally. It is pretty sown up in Phoenix, I feel I am hitting my head against a brick wall. Still early days.

Hmmmm...I have a paralegal degree and now I'm a nurse.....I wonder how well those two things would meld (after I get experience as a nurse)..

Looks like a good way to become an NLC is to take the AANLC modules. That is my take on these posts anyway.

I have 11 years experience total, including ER, M/S, and adolescent psych, and am VERY interested in being an NLC. I am JUST starting to investigate it so any further info on it would be appreciated, especially on the useful content of the AANLC and VMI courses.

Hello Talonn. I am currently taking the AALNC online course. I am just in Module 1 but have been very pleased so far. I considered other options as well, but decided I wanted something I could work at my own pace. I think there are other excellent options out there, but this was a very attractive alternative for me.

I took a Constitutional Law class in college (I started out as a pre-law major), and we had to do alot of case briefing. We had to take cases that were anywhere from 5 to 150 pages and break it down to no more than 2 pages max.

We had to put the case name, the issue, the decision, and one supporting and dissenting opinion.

This was very, very difficult to do...I would imagine that being a NLC would be very similar...breaking down large records into smaller understandable points.

Would my assumption be correct?

Exactly, BSNtobe2009. Read the MR and interpret for the attorney-client in lay terms, cite the issues of the case, conduct literature research, determine if the four elements of the case are satisfied, cite probable objections, identity possible expert witnesses, and a host of other medical-legal aspects involved. Then, write a report, either brief or comprehensive and in the style requested by the attorney-client. Also, develop timelines of the case for the report itself and as for demonstrative evidence.

siri, are you interested in mentoring for reimbursment? how would i go about finding a mentor since i am not using vickie's program? i am on module 2 of the aalnc online module program and am finding it a little boring at first. probably since i was used to that fast paced er and nurse manager roles. i have really had to start looking at slowing the pace some especially physically due to related health problems. i have been on ltd from my hospital since last october, so i thought what better way to pass the time but to start to take the classes that will help me better my future in the long run. any advice would be greatly appreciated. nurscat

i serve as volunteer here at allnurses.com and try to assist ya'll in your careers. i do mentor many who are considering going into this profession and mentor those who are brand new lncs trying to successfully market as well as serve as mentor for the ones who are having difficulty with that first case.

I am curious about the fee charged for review of the record and the fee charged for appearing in court. When asked to review, do you go ahead and prepare summaries, timelines etc?

If anyone posts their charges, please indicate what state you are in.
